Tottenham suffered their sixth Premier League defeat of the season when they faced Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon. The Lilywhites were largely the architects of their own downfall, allowing Sean Dyche’s men to claim all three points convincingly. They were second-best in every department, thoroughly outplayed by Forest despite having two extra days of rest going into the match.
Archie Gray’s mistake while playing out from the back gifted Forest their opening goal in the first half. He was pressed well by Ibrahim Sangare, who won the ball and squared it to Callum Hudson-Odoi for a simple tap-in. Going 1-0 down was not enough to spark a reaction from the North Londoners, as they appeared to drop their intensity even further after conceding, adopting a pragmatic approach aimed at avoiding further damage.
Hudson-Odoi then found the back of the net minutes into the second half with a cross-shot from long range to make it 2-0. As with the opening goal, Guglielmo Vicario was partly at fault once again. Forest midfielder Ibrahim Sangare soon added a third, producing a superb long-range strike to seal a historic victory for the Nottingham-based club.
Tottenham fans seemed to vent their frustration at Thomas Frank when the Danish tactician opted to introduce defence-minded players in the second half against Nottingham Forest. The Lilywhites were already two goals down at that stage, leaving many supporters puzzled as to why Frank chose not to add more attacking options and apply pressure on Sean Dyche’s side.
The Danish tactician later attempted to justify his decision to bring on defence-minded players in the second half, despite watching his side struggle to create chances in the final third. Speaking in his post-match press conference (via Tottenham Hotspur), Frank said, explaining his rather controversial defensive substitutions:
“We had four offensive players on the pitch. I think that’s fair to say. So, I felt that, just to go back to the bit before where I say we’re disjointed. So, if you’re disjointed, you can have 11 offensive players on the pitch. It will not help. So we need to be in sync, and then it helps, and hopefully we can find a way back after that.”
Frank explained that Spurs already had four attacking players on the pitch, which prompted him to introduce Joao Palhinha, Lucas Bergvall, and Ben Davies in the second half to provide stability. He hoped their presence would help the team regain cohesion and retain possession higher up the pitch. The Danish tactician also claimed that adding more attackers would not have changed the outcome, as the side looked disjointed from the outset.
Thomas Frank has come under significant scrutiny for his pragmatic approach this season. The Danish manager often chooses the safer option when given a choice, which stands in stark contrast to what Tottenham traditionally represent. As a result, it is understandable that fans are unhappy with his defence-first mentality, as they want to see the team take risks against challenging opponents, even if it leads to setbacks in the long-run.
Introducing three defensive changes in the second-half against Nottingham Forest was not the right call from Thomas Frank. It only reinforced the feeling that the Danish tactician has yet to fully grasp what the club stands for and how vital it is for the Lilywhites to play with attacking freedom in the final third. The time has come for Frank to realise that he is no longer managing Brentford. The sooner he understands that, the better it will be for the highly rated manager.
