Tottenham boss Thomas Frank sheds light on teenage prodigy Lucas Bergvall’s potential in the game

Tottenham Hotspur have begun the 2025/26 season flying. They’ve lost just one of their five Premier League games, winning three others as they find themselves third in the table.

Thomas Frank’s side have also made winning starts in the cup competitions Europa League and Carabao Cup, respectively seeing off Villarreal in a 1-0 win and Doncaster Rovers in a more convincing 3-0 victory. A regular fixture in the side has been Lucas Bergvall, who has started four of seven games since the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in August, but has since played a part in every Spurs fixture.

The teenage prodigy has one goal and three assists thus far across those fixtures, thriving in a new advanced midfield role under Thomas Frank. It is fair to say that he is becoming undroppable from Frank’s starting XI. Such has been his meteoric rise that Lucas Bergvall has already been tipped to become the north London club’s skipper in the future.

Thomas Frank speaks on Lucas Bergvall’s ceiling

Bergvall’s rise has been plain for all to see, and his constant involvement in the Tottenham side underlines just how influential the teenager has been under Frank. The midfielder was the club’s Player of the Season last term, and he has continued building on that by bringing in more consistency and maturity in his performance levels.

Frank has already admitted he loves the Sweden international’s energy and enthusiasm, and the young gun’s performances received wider appreciation when he was adjudged the Man of the Match against West Ham at the London Stadium. Addressing the media ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ visit to Tottenham, the Danish tactician was asked about Bergvall’s ceiling in the game. He said in the press conference:

“Hopefully as high as possible. My finest job with the coaches is to maximise potential and that’s my most important task. With Lucas he’s in a really good flow right now. Really pleased with him and he’s adding more to his game like running into the box.”

Tottenham boss delighted with Bergvall’s development

Frank has expressed his happiness with Bergvall’s development, stating he is adding more to his game with his late runs into the box. The midfielder has already shown a glimpse of his perfect timing of late runs in the box with his looping header in the 3-0 win over West Ham.

The Swedish prodigy has also shed light on his gaffer’s demands of playing in a No.10 role. It is clear that Frank is not only getting the best out of the collective, but also individuals like Bergvall are developing and playing at the best of their abilities. Tottenham have a gem on their hands, which they want to keep for a very long time, after securing his future with a new contract until 2031.

There is a long way for Bergvall to go in his career, but the fans are already seeing how big a player he can become for the Lilywhites in the future.
