Thomas Frank has been installed as the new Tottenham Hotspur boss on a three-year contract, with the North Londoners having agreed a lucrative compensation package with cross-town rivals Brentford earlier this week.
The Dane will be a man on a mission to turn Spurs’ Premier League fortunes around after their 17th-placed finish last under his predecessor, Ange Postecoglou. While Postecoglou did live up to his word and helped the club achieve one of their season’s objectives, Daniel Levy clearly wants a man who can give the Lilywhites some much-needed stability in the Premier League. Perhaps, that is why he has appointed Thomas Frank.
Frank has inherited a decent squad that actually boasts of some brilliant players and experienced campaigners. Among them is James Maddison, who like majority of his teammates endured an up-and-down 2024/25 season.
The England international was one of the most creative players for Ange’s side, delivering some biggest moments and supplying 12 goals and 11 assists in 45 matches across all competitions. He played an instrumental role in Spurs reaching the Europa League final, unfortunately a serious knee injury did not allow him to take part in the showpiece event.
Despite 23 goal contributions throughout the past season, James Maddison was in and out of the first team. Ange mostly preferred the tenacity and running power of Pape Matar Sarr and Lucas Bergvall over the Coventry-born talent in the middle of the park.
Often accused by certain pundits and some sections of the media for not being consistent enough, the 28-year-old has never shied away from giving them back. After talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan had said Maddison is not a signing that would guide Spurs to a trophy, the creative midfielder did hit back with a video on his official X account.
Now, former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has poked Maddison with his latest comments. He gave his thoughts on Tottenham’s appointment of Frank, calling him an “intelligent coach”. The English pundit accused Spurs players for not doing enough in the Premier League that led to Ange’s sacking, whilst singling out Maddison for not “delivering enough over the season”.
“Someone like James Maddison talks a lot, but he does not deliver enough over the season. He was one player that appeared to have a good relationship with Ange, so it will be interesting to see how Frank views him. That is something for readers to keep an eye,” Stan Collymore wrote in his exclusive column for CaughtOffside.
Maddison suffered a serious knee injury before the Europa League final and is set to spend the next couple of months on the sidelines. Hopefully, the playmaker makes a swift recovery, as Frank will want to have such a classy player in his squad next season.
It will be interesting to see how the Dane manages to get the best out of the England international. At 28 and into his prime, Maddison for his part will want to stay injury free and bring more consistency to his game. A productive campaign under Frank would certainly silence Collymore.
