England manager Thomas Tuchel was forced into another late adjustment ahead of the national team’s upcoming pre-World Cup fixtures, with injuries continuing to reshape his plans.
Eberechi Eze withdrew from the squad after suffering a calf injury, leaving Tuchel needing a replacement just days before friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
Rather than simply filling the spot, Tuchel turned to a player already pushing for inclusion.
Harvey Barnes is set to join the squad, earning his first England call-up since 2020 after a strong season with Newcastle United. The winger has produced 14 goals and five assists across all competitions and has been a consistent presence in both domestic and European matches.
The decision also carries added significance beyond form and depth.
Barnes had recently been targeted by Scotland, who attempted to convince him to switch international allegiance ahead of the World Cup. Eligible through his grandparents, the 28-year-old ultimately declined the approach and committed to pursuing his England career.
“Harvey’s going to concentrate on trying to play for England, he’s not going to come to Scotland,” Scotland manager Steve Clarke said.
Tuchel’s call-up reinforces that stance at a key moment, bringing Barnes into the setup as competition intensifies for World Cup spots.
The England manager has made clear these final camps are about evaluating options, with players competing for their “tickets” for the tournament.

Even though the upcoming matches are friendlies, the timing of the selection strengthens England’s position. A call-up at this stage signals intent while keeping Barnes integrated within the squad structure.
Barnes is expected to join the group this week as Tuchel continues to assess his options ahead of the summer tournament.
England will open their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17.
