It comes as no surprise that Tottenham are targeting more depth in their attack ahead of the second half of the season. During the summer window, the Lilywhites strengthened their frontline under Thomas Frank by signing Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani. However, they failed to secure a natural left-winger before the deadline – a decision that is now proving costly.
The absence of a reliably option on the left flank has been a glaring issue for Spurs. Thomas Fran has repeatedly struggled to replace the influence of Heung-Min Son this season. The likes of Xavi Simons, Mathys Tel, and Wilson Odobert have all been deployed out wide, but none have delivered consistent performances in that role.
Frank’s system relies heavily on wide players to create and convert chances. He demands wingers who are direct, pacey, and capable of running in behind opposition defences while frequently getting into goal-scoring positions. Without a natural fit, Spurs have lacked the cutting edge they need from the flanks this season.
One player Tottenham have long admired is Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo. The Ghana international was identified as a potential successor to Heung-Min Son, and Spurs made a late push on deadline day, making multiple attempts to lure him to N17. Semenyo, however, opted to remain at the Vitality Stadium and even committed his future by signing a new contract with the Cherries.
Despite this setback, a recent report suggests that Spurs have not given up on the 25-year-old yet. They remain interested in bringing him in during the January transfer window to resolve their left-wing problems. The report, however, also adds that the 25-year-old’s new contract does not have a release clause, so Spurs might have to pay a premium to land him in the coming months.
Now, there is a new update on the transfer saga involving the Bournemouth attacker. As per TBR Football, Tottenham now face stiff competition for the winger’s signature. European heavyweights Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Atletico Madrid are all monitoring Semenyo as they look to strengthen their own forward lines for the second half of the season.
The situation leaves Spurs in a difficult position. While they are eager to land Semenyo sooner rather than later, Bournemouth are reportedly unwilling to sell him in January. The Cherries are determined to keep hold of the Ghana international as they aim to build on last season’s progress and push for European football through the Premier League.
For Tottenham, it remains to be seen whether their pursuit of Semenyo can overcome the mounting obstacles – or if their search for a long-term left-wing solution will stretch beyond the January transfer window.
