Three stats which show why Chelsea’s attack has hit the wall after long season

Chelsea’s goals have dried up in recent weeks, and it seems like it’s a question of fatigue as much as anything.

Chelsea’s comfortable win over Aston Villa felt like a crucial moment in the race for the top 4 – but the Blues have since stuttered to a halt entirely.

They’ve scored just twice in their last four games, and that’s put impossible pressure on the defence. Cerys Jones’ piece for the Athletic points out a change in their style. It seems like the fatigue from a long season preceded by a busy summer has finally kicked in, and Chelsea no longer have the energy to get the goals they need.

Exhausted Chelsea hit the wall

On the left you have the first 25 games of the season, on the right the last 6 games.

% of passes forward 28 24
Long ball share 9% 6%
Take-ons attempted per 90 19.96 15.7

As Jones illustrates with many good graphics in the piece, this is all part of a general slowing down of the team in attack. Players bursting forward on the break are being left with minimal or no support.

This has in turn hurt Joao Pedro, who has gone into another one of his quiet spells as the team around him fail to provide chances, and fail to get around him so that he can support them.

Hopefully this international break has given a small chance for a recharge for some of these players for the final stretch. That sounds like wishful thinking.
