Tottenham’s poor outing against Arsenal highlighted just how much the Lilywhites are lacking a reliable attacker in the final third. Wilson Odobert started on the left under Thomas Frank, and it was clear the Frenchman still needs time before he can be considered a regular starter. He was consistently outpaced and physically overpowered by Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber in the wide areas.
The disappointing result and performance against Mikel Arteta’s side should serve as a wake-up call for Spurs as they prepare to strengthen the squad for the second half of the season. Arsenal barely needed to move out of first gear to beat the Lilywhites, which is concerning in itself and shows the clear gap in quality between the two clubs.
Despite spending £180m in the summer, Tottenham must act quickly and secure more attacking reinforcements in January. The ideal mid-season signing would be Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo. He has been linked with a winter move, and the Cherries will be forced to sell if his €65m release clause is activated. Spurs are eager to bring him in and see him as a long-term solution on the left flank.
Antoine Semenyo fits perfectly into Thomas Frank’s system, offering a new dynamic in the final third while providing a constant goal threat. The Ghanaian international could also form a strong partnership with fellow countryman Mohammed Kudus, giving Spurs a more potent attacking setup at N17. Fans will hope that the 25-year-old chooses Tottenham over other potential suitors in January.
Tim Sherwood has urged the club not to repeat the same mistake they made with Eberechi Eze and to act quickly for Semenyo. Speaking on Sky Sports (via X), Sherwood said,
“Get the deal done! When you’ve got the opportunity to get the deal done! Look at the players who have come in that are supposedly operating in his position. They waste so much money who are £30-40-20 million, look at the money they’ve spent for them players, alright [Mohammed] Kudus [£55m] has done okay.”
"It happens time and time again!"

The ex-manager added,
“What was Eze, £65m wasn’t he? You’d rather pay an extra £10m for a make-the-difference player. You know he’s gonna be a make-the-difference player. Just get the deal done as soon as you can. Don’t give the opportunity to other clubs who are higher than you in the league to come in and nick your player.”
“Save your money on average players that you keep buying. Let the academy boys be the stocking-fillers and fill up your squad, and [spend] make-the-difference money on make-the-difference players like him. Like Semenyo now, go and get him, Tottenham. Don’t wait for Man City, don’t wait for Liverpool, don’t wait for Man United or whoever it is, go and get him before everyone else comes to the party. It doesn’t give him a decision then. It’s frustrating!”
Sherwood is right to criticise Tottenham’s transfer strategy, pointing out that the club often focuses too heavily on signing inexperienced prospects in the hope they become future stars. The Lilywhites need proven difference-makers if they want to compete at the top. This is why the former manager has urged Spurs to move quickly for Semenyo rather than wait for rival clubs to make their interest known.
The upcoming transfer window will reveal how the new Spurs hierarchy intends to operate. They cannot repeat the same approach used in the summer. Tottenham missed out on several key targets before the season began, including hat-trick hero Eberechi Eze. It is vital for the club to act first and secure Premier League-proven talent in the coming weeks if they are to close the gap on their rivals this season.
