Tommy Doyle reflects on his loan spell at United

It has previously been reported that Sheffield United is interested in bringing Tommy Doyle back to Bramall Lane, after such a successful loan spell last campaign.

Doyle returned to Manchester City after he returned from the England U21’s following their European triumph. But after the midfielder was left out of Pep Guardiola’s pre-season team, this has led to further speculation regarding the 21-year-old’s immediate future.

The midfielder recently reflected on his time with the Blades:

“It’s a proper homely club and the fans were incredible and really good with me. It was a place I loved being at. It was unbelievable and I was so happy to win promotion. I’m just thankful to Hecky, the manager, and Sheffield United for bringing me in.

“I went there to play and thankfully that’s what happened. The lads there are brilliant with a lot of experience which is what you need. I think there was a fine balance of fearless youth and wise heads which helped us massively.” [Manchester City]

During the previous season, Doyle started as a rotational player under Oliver Norwood. But as the campaign progressed, he proved his worth and became a key figure for the Blades, frequently getting the nod over more seasoned midfielders. Despite being just 21 years old, he showcased his abilities by providing seven assists and scoring four goals in 39 appearances [SofaScore].

United have already added a new midfielder this summer with Anis Slimane joining from Brøndby, and they still have intentions to re-sign Tommy Doyle in this window. It is thought that the Blades can afford the transfer fee of the player, but wages and the possibility of United getting relegated could be a stumbling block in negotiations.
