Top 4 All-Time UEFA Champions League Hat-Tricks

The UEFA Champions League, formerly the European Cup, includes world-class players. In most seasons, there are usually a few hat-tricks scored in the group stages, and sometimes in the later stages. These are the greatest hat-tricks scored in the Champions League/European Cup.

Lionel Messi

When Barcelona played Leverkusen in the second leg of their second round fixture, at the Nou Camp, they were leading from the first leg. However, their stars were still in the first eleven for the return fixture, among them Messi. In the first half, the forward chipped over the Leverkusen goalkeeper to make it 1-0 to the Spanish giants. A second Messi goal was scored when the forward struck a low shot from close to the penalty spot. Shortly before the interval, Messi scored again with another sumptuous chip over the keeper into the net.

That was the hat-trick, but Messi scored more. The rout continued in the second half when Messi scored a third goal from close range. The best goal of the game was probably Messi’s fifth, a strike from outside the box that sent the ball flying into the back of the net. It was a historic fifth goal, and a hat-trick, as five is a record number of goals scored in a single Champions League game.

Robert Lewandowski

In the 2013 semi-final, Dortmund took on Real Madrid. Real Madrid may have had the prolific Ronaldo in their team, but it was Lewandowski who dominated this Champions League encounter. The forward opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes to put the German team one goal up.

In the second, the floodgates opened. Lewandowski scored a couple of goals within five minutes to sink Madrid. When a penalty was given, the forward stepped up to make it Dortmund 4 Madrid 1. As such, Lewandowski scored four goals against a supposedly world-class Real Madrid team.

Mohammad Salah

Mohammad Salah made Champions League history when he scored the fastest hat-trick in the competition’s history against Rangers in 2022. Salah came off the bench (why was he ever on it?) in the second half to score a nonchalant goal from close range. Then, he scored an exquisite second goal with a strike from the edge of the Rangers’ penalty box. Salah wrapped up his hat-trick with a third decent goal just within the box as Liverpool ran rampant in a 7-1 win against the Glasgow giants. The quality of Salah’s goals was great, and the speed of the hat-trick scored in six minutes and 12 seconds was record-breaking.

Ferenc Puskas

As of yet, no hat-trick has been scored in the final during the Champions League era. However, a few hat-tricks were scored in former European Cup finals. When Real Madrid took on Frankfurt in the European Cup final, Puskas scored four goals during the 7-3 thrashing of the Germans. The first was scored just before the interval, and a further three goals followed after half-time. Four remains a record number of goals scored in the final.

End of My Best Champions League Hat-Tricks Rant

Those were four of the greatest hat-tricks scored in Champions League/European Cup matches. The hat-tricks set records in European soccer and included some terrific goals. It’s no coincidence that they were also hat-tricks from four legendary players who destroyed teams when at their best.
