Tottenham ace Son makes grovelling apology to supporters
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

It’s already been a long, hard season for many players, particularly those that have had to interrupt their domestic campaigns and turn out for their countries in mid-season tournaments.

The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) has always been a thorn in the side for clubs, and this winter they also had call ups for players to go to the Asian Cup to contend with.

Indeed, Tottenham Hotspur lost their talisman, Son Heung-min, for the best part of a month as his South Korea side made it all the way to the semi-finals of the tournament.

He came back from international duty with strapping on his hand and that was apparently due to an altercation he’d had with team-mate Kang-in Lee the evening before South Korea were beaten by Jordan in one of the shocks of the tournament.

It’s alleged, and cited by Metro, that the reason for the fight between the two players was as a result of youngsters in the team leaving a meal quicker than what might’ve been considered acceptable to go and play table tennis, something that clearly irked Son.

In the aftermath of the furore that’s erupted as a result of the confrontation, Son has taken to his official Instagram account to apologise for his part.

‘Today, I want to address a somewhat serious and difficult matter,’ he wrote.

‘Kang-in has sincerely reflected on his actions and offered heartfelt apologies to me and all the players of the national team.

‘I, too, have made many mistakes and shown undesirable behaviour when I was young, but each time, I had the sharp advice and teachings of good seniors, which I believe have led me to where I am today.

‘To ensure that Kang-in never repeats such misconduct, all of us players, as senior members and leaders of the national team, will be especially supportive to help Kang-in grow into a better person and player.

‘I do not believe I handled the situation well and recognise that my actions deserved criticism. However, as a captain, I believe it is one of my duties to take such unpleasant actions for the sake of the team.

‘Even if faced with the same situation again, I will act in the best interest of the team. However, I will strive to lead my team-mates more smartly and more wisely in the future.

‘Since that incident, Kang-in has been going through a very difficult time. Please forgive him with a generous heart. As the captain of the national team, I earnestly ask for this.

‘Also, rumours circulating about division within the national team are irrelevant to the truth. We have always strived to see only one team and one goal. Despite receiving so much love through football I am sincerely sorry for causing such a disruptive issue.

‘Moving forward, we will work even harder to ensure that the South Korean national team grows stronger from this experience. Once again, I sincerely apologise as the captain of the South Korean national team.’

Three Premier League title contenders to watch

Finally, the season is here: Premier League will begin Friday with defending champion Liverpool hosting Bournemouth at Anfield. Here are three teams that should contend for the title: Liverpool | first last season Key transfers out: right back Trent Alexander-Arnold (to Real Madrid), winger Luis Diaz (to Bayern Munich), forward Darwin Nuñez (to Al-Hilal) Key transfers in: Attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz (from Bayer Leverkusen), right back Jeremie Frimpong (from Bayer Leverkusen), goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili (from Valencia) Liverpool tied the all-time championship record last season when it lifted its 20th Premier League trophy, and it looks set to break it this season. The Reds pulled off fabulous deals over the summer, strengthening their team in nearly every position. But "nearly" is key here: Despite investing in depth, Liverpool has not made significant moves at center back. That means Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahim Konaté — two capable but feisty players who both considered leaving Liverpool this summer — must play well in the center of defense. Liverpool enters this season in a strong position, but it also enters it carrying the weight of tragedy. Liverpool winger Diogo Jota, just 28 years old and set for a strong season with the Reds, died this summer in a car accident in Spain. His untimely death leaves an emotional hole for Liverpool, but it also provides motivation: This team is eager to win to honor Jota's memory. "Jota was the player that if things were really, really, really difficult, I always looked at him and said, ‘Now we need something special from you.’ And he delivered so many times in those moments," said Liverpool coach Arne Slot, per The Guardian. "So we are in a very difficult time, so let’s try to do what Diogo did so many times." Arsenal | second last season Last season: second Key transfers out: Midfielder Jorginho (to Flamengo), defensive midfielder Thomas Partey (to Villarreal), defender Takehiro Tomiyasu (unsigned) Key transfers in: Forward Viktor Gyökeres (from Sporting Lisbon), winger Noni Madueke (from Chelsea), defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi (from Real Sociedad) Arsenal has been competitive in each of the past three Premier League seasons, but it's always been missing one thing: a solid, reliable forward with a nose for goal. Enter Gyökeres. The Swedish striker lit up Europe last season, notching 39 goals from 33 appearances for Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Every club would have liked to sign him, but it was Arsenal that got the deal done. His arrival is a statement of intent from the North London side. Man City | third last season Key transfers out: Midfielder Kevin De Bruyne (to Napoli) Key transfers in: midfielder Tijjani Reijnders (from AC Milan), attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki (from Lyon) Last season was disastrous for City. The club, high off four straight Premier League titles, floundered through much of the season. "I am not good enough," said once-hallowed coach Pep Guardiola during the worst of City's doldrums. "I am the boss. I am the manager. I have to find solutions and so far I haven't. That's the reality." Guardiola has pushed for solutions over the summer; he brought in underrated Dutch midfielder Reijnders and hyped French winger Cherki to revitalize City's center third. Both are strong additions, but they're unlikely to change City's fortunes on their own. The club needs more change. It could get it by selling winger Savinho in favor of Real Madrid attacker Rodrygo, but both transactions remain speculative at this stage, so that means City remains far behind its competitors in the race for the Premier League title.

Vikings WR gets brutal injury news for second straight season

A Minnesota Vikings wide receiver's season is already over. The Minnesota Vikings announced on Tuesday that wide receiver Rondale Moore is being placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a leg injury that he suffered in the team's first preseason game against the Houston Texans this past weekend. It is a devastating blow for Moore who is now being sidelined for an entire season, before it even begins, for the second year in a row. Moore signed a one-year, $2 million contract in free agency with the Vikings this offseason in the hopes he could return from a different injury that cost him the entirety of the 2024 season. Moore was a member of the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 after being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals for backup quarterback Desmond Ridder. This is now two different teams that Moore has been a part of but will never play a game for them due to injuries. Moore was injured while returning a punt. He began his career with the Arizona Cardinals, catching 135 passes for 1,201 yards over three seasons before being traded. He was never going to be counted on to be a key contributor for the Vikings offense this season, especially given the superstars they already have at wide receiver in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, but he still had a chance to be an interesting depth player. Now it is fair to wonder what the rest of his career might even look like. Missing two full seasons due to two different leg injuries is going to be a brutal thing to try to come back from. Missing two seasons for any reason is difficult, but when you add the leg injuries to the equation, it makes the obstacle even steeper.

Milwaukee Brewers: Player Leaves Game With Concerning Head Injury Amid Crew’s Tuesday Win vs. Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers came out on top once again on Tuesday, sending yet another strong statement to the rest of the big leagues in the form of a 14-0 drubbing of the Pittsburgh Pirates at American Family Field in Milwaukee. The Brewers have now won 11 straight games, while improving to 75-44 overall. As for the Pirates, they have lost their fourth consecutive contest while dropping to 51-70. Making the night even worse for the Pirates was the apparent head injury suffered by outfielder Oneil Cruz. He collided with teammate Jack Suwinski in the fourth inning as both players tried to make a defensive play. Cruz stayed in the game for a bit but was removed in the sixth inning for pinch-hitter and veteran Tommy Pham. The Pirates have yet to disclose the exact nature of Cruz’s injury, so it’s possible that he could be ruled out for the series finale this Wednesday. So far in the 2025 MLB regular season, the 26-year-old Dominican is leading the Pirates with 18 home runs to go with 51 RBIs, but is also hitting just .207/.304 /398. Milwaukee Brewers aiming for a Pirates sweep All eyes will once again be on the Brewers this Wednesday, as they have a chance to stretch their win streak to a dozen games and add more to their lead atop the National League Central standings. After Paul Skenes failed to deliver on the mound for the Pirates on Tuesday, Pittsburgh will have Mitch Keller toeing the rubber. Keller was solid in his previous start versus the Brewers, pitching six innings of one-run ball while striking out seven hitters in a 2-1 victory at home back in May. As for Milwaukee, it will give the ball to Brandon Woodruff, who is 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA in three starts at home, thus far this season.

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge lands at No. 1 on prestigious list

The MLB regular season is roughly 75 percent complete. Plenty has changed since the start of the season, but one constant is New York Yankees superstar outfielder Aaron Judge. On Tuesday, ESPN updated its top-50 player rankings. Judge, who was fourth on the World Wide Leader's initial 2025 rankings of baseball's best players in early April, claimed the top spot. Los Angeles Dodgers DH/starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani, Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts rounded out the top four on the April list. Just over four months later, Judge edged Ohtani for No. 1. ESPN shared the article with the fully updated rankings on X (formerly Twitter). Judge is raking again this season, posting 37 HRs and 87 RBI with an impressive .336 BA through 109 games. It's fair to wonder where the spiraling New York Yankees (63-56 through Monday) would be without his production. Ohtani, meanwhile, hasn't done anything to drop down in the rankings; it's just hard to argue with the numbers Judge is putting up. The 31-year-old Dodgers star has 42 HRs and 78 RBI and a .284 batting average in 117 games. Plus, he has a 2.37 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 19 innings. Among the biggest risers on ESPN's list are Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh (86th in April to fourth) and Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong (unranked to seventh). For Betts and Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez, 2025 hasn't been as kind. Both fell from the top 10 to outside the top 50 altogether. The most important games of the season are still to come, and that's where Judge and Ohtani could add a few more bullet points to their already impressive resumes.
