Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs scouting Cardiff City defender Dylan Lawlor

Tottenham Hotspur managed to save face in the summer transfer window by landing two quality signings in the final week.

Xavi Simons has been signed from RB Leipzig on a five-year deal, and Randal Kolo Muani was welcomed on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain. These players, along with Joao Palhinha, Mohammed Kudus, Kota Takai, Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso, were all the players Spurs brought in for new head coach Thomas Frank to work with this season.

In recent years under Daniel Levy, the Lilywhites emphasised signing young, exciting talents with high potential. The acquisitions of Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Destiny Udogie, Pape Matar Sarr, Mathys Tel and some more are prime examples of the club’s strategy. While Levy is no more Tottenham’s chairman after his abrupt resignation earlier this month, it looks like the north Londoners will not abandon their strategy of investing in young talent.

Tottenham interested in Cardiff City starlet

According to an exclusive report from EFL Analysis, Tottenham are among many Premier League clubs interested in Cardiff City talent Dylan Lawlor. Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund have also been keeping tabs on the teenager’s performances.

The Wales international made his debut for Cardiff City last season. The Bluebirds suffered relegation to League One at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. They have started their bid for immediate promotion to the Championship extremely well with five wins and a draw in the opening six games, and Dylan Lawlor has been one of the biggest reasons for that.

The centre-back has been impressive, cementing himself as a first-team regular so far under Barry-Murphy, as well as making his senior Wales debut recently. He also recently agreed to a new long-term contract and Cardiff City are very much keen to keep hold of him, although the aforementioned report adds clubs such as Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United have all scouted him this season and remain interested.

What should Spurs do?

Tottenham have an array of young defensive talents, of which many have gone out on loan. Alfie Dorrington and Ashley Phillips re-joined Aberdeen and Stoke City on loan after impressing last season, while Luka Vuskovic, who only officially arrived at N17 back in July, sealed a switch to Bundesliga outfit HSV Hamburger.

However, the presence of these young defenders in the club’s payroll should not stop the north Londoners from enhancing their squad for the future, making Lawlor an ideal target. The 19-year-old marked his international debut with a Man of the Match display in Wales’ 1-0 win over Kazakhstan in a World Cup qualifier last week, showing his promise by filling in for the experienced former Spurs defender Joe Rodon.

With several European clubs lurking, Tottenham must make a concrete step to sign Cardiff’s rising talent next year.
