Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha has been linked with a move to Tottenham

Yves Bissouma has failed to live up to the expectations during his time at Tottenham Hotspur. The combative midfielder has often looked out of place playing for the North Londoners.

Having entered the final year of his deal, the Hotspur Way chiefs are ready to offload the 28-year-old this summer. Yves Bissouma has not been short of suitors, with Juventus the latest club to express an interest in signing him. Spurs are aiming to fortify their midfield unit for next season, but before bringing in new talents in that position, they must cash-in on underperforming players in the summer.

Tottenham are desperately in need of a defensive midfielder, as the lack of such a profile badly hurt them last season. There was a lack of balance usually in the team, and former boss Ange Postecoglou’s decision to either use Bissouma or Rodrigo Bentancur as a No.6 barely worked. So, a cultured No.6 is the club’s priority after securing a deal for West Ham United attacker Mohammed Kudus.

Tottenham considering move for Bayern Munich misfit

According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham are considering a move for Bayern Munich flop Joao Palhinha.

Joao Palhinha moved to Bayern Munich from Fulham in July 2024- a year after his deal to the Bavarian giants had collapsed. The 30-year-old won the Bundesliga title during his debut season with Bayern Munich, but his contributions were few and far in between owing to his injury struggles and stiff competition from the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlovic.

The Portugal international has been offered to several clubs after a challenging campaign in Munich. Along with Tottenham, West Ham and Fulham are also keen on signing Palhinha, the aforementioned report adds.

Joao Palhinha would a smart stopgap arrangement for Spurs

Palhinha made his name at Sporting CP as a strong, tough-tackling defensive midfielder. This led to Fulham signing him in the summer of 2022, and in just two seasons, the Portuguese became one of the division’s coveted midfield enforcers. Operating from the base of midfield, he would screen Fulham’s defence by breaking plenty of opposition’s attacks and keep things ticking over.

While Palhinha barely got opportunities to showcase his skill set at Bayern, he could be a useful signing for Tottenham. In Thomas Frank’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system, the Portugal international could take up the No.6 role and bring the much-needed security net for the defenders. He has got decent experience of the league as well, so it would be a low-risk acquisition for the Lilywhites.

Having recently turned 30, the Lisbon-born star should ideally give Spurs three quality seasons. In the meantime, Archie Gray could learn the tricks of the trade from Palhinha and eventually succeed him in the heart of the club’s midfield. Thus, Daniel Levy will need to move away from his youth-oriented transfer strategy a bit and secure a deal for Palhinha.
