Tottenham backed to beat Liverpool and other Premier League clubs in the race to sign Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo

Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo has put Tottenham Hotspur and several other Premier League clubs on red alert ahead of the January transfer window after details of his release clause emerged last week.

The Ghana international has continued his scintillating form this season with Bournemouth after rejecting the chance to leave the Vitaliy Stadium in the summer transfer window. Tottenham and Manchester United saw offers rejected in the summer by the 25-year-old, who instead opted to sign a new deal until 2030.

After losing key players such as Dean Huijsen, Illia Zabarnyi, Milos Kerkez and Dango Ouattara in the summer, the Cherries managing to keep hold of Antoine Semenyo was considered a massive coup. By tying Semenyo down to a new deal, the club agreed to insert a £65m release clause, which can be triggered in January.

Keith Wyness thinks Tottenham are favourites to sign Semenyo

As per recent reports , Liverpool have entered the mix to sign Semenyo from Bournemouth. They are planning for life after Mohamed Salah, who in 33 and has witnessed a massive dip in form this term. There are several other Premier League bigwigs vying for the Ghanaian’s signature.

Now, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has given his verdict on which club he thinks Semenyo would end up at. He feels Tottenham are leading Liverpool and other Premier League clubs in the race for the Bournemouth star, whose release clause has to be activated in the opening two weeks of January.

“Well, I’ve been saying all along that he will go to Spurs, and I still believe he could be a marquee signing for Spurs. They’re going to be trying very hard to get him,” Keith Wyness exclusively told Inside Track podcast (h/t Football Insider).

“Certainly, this £65m clause is big. It’s got to be exercised in the first two weeks of January is what we’ve been told, to give Bournemouth some time to try and fill the gap. I think he’ll move, certainly, in January. There will be a race for him as well, because he is on the fire at the moment.

“People have been talking about him as the replacement for Salah at Liverpool, but I still believe that Spurs would be the frontrunners. I think there will be a lot of interest and at the moment we’re going to see how December shapes up, but I’ve got this hunch about Spurs for some reason.”

Semenyo would be a statement signing for Spurs

Semenyo ticks perhaps all the boxes at Tottenham. A left-winger by trade, the African star can also operate off the right and through the middle as a No.9, and such flexibility would add so much value to Thomas Frank’s attack. Having proven himself in the Premier League, he’d be counted as someone to fill the void left by the legendary Son Heung-min.

Whether the move happens in January or at the end of the season, the ex-Bristol City man has already stated his desire to play for a club competing in Europe’s top competitions. As a self-proclaimed Arsenal fan, Tottenham could rub it on the faces of their arch-rivals by signing Semenyo. However, given the growing interest in the player with Liverpool the latest club to enter the race, signing Semenyo would be an uphill task for the Lilywhites in January.

All in all, if Tottenham manage to pull off a deal, it’d represent a statement across the English top-flight.
