With technical director Johan Lange leading the recruitment drive, head coach Thomas Frank is aiming to make new signings at Tottenham Hotspur as he seeks to make his mark after being appointed as Ange Postecoglou’s successor.
The Lilywhites have already signed Mathys Tel on a permanent deal from Bayern Munich, and are now eyeing a move for Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze as a ‘statement signing’ to bolster their forward line. There are also other attackers who have been linked with a move to the Hotspur Way. And one of them is Timothy Weah.
Spurs have made an enquiry to Juventus over a possible move for Timothy Weah. It is believed that it would be difficult to land the USA international as he still has three years left on his contract and is considered a crucial part of manager Igor Tudor’s plans at the club.
The 25-year-old moved to Juventus from Ligue 1 club LOSC Lille in the summer of 2023. He has played in multiple positions from defence to attack across two seasons for the Old Lady, racking up seven goals and as many assists in 78 appearances. He added more productivity to his game this past season with six goals and five assists in 43 outings across all competitions.
Now, reputable podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham has given his verdict on the player. He feels Tottenham do not need to sign Weah as Spurs are well covered on the right flank.
“Weah can play in several positions,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“I’ve seen him play as a full-back or as a winger. He’s obviously from a very good pedigree. However, I think we’re well covered in the positions that he plays. I don’t see him being an instant starter for Tottenham.
“I don’t see him as being better than Pedro Porro or Djed Spence, and on the wing, we’ve already got Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski, who can play there. As a result, this is a transfer I don’t see happening.”
Brennan Johnson was the undisputed starter on the right wing under Ange Postecoglou this past season, and he emerged as the club’s top scorer with 18 strikes, including the winner in the Europa League final. As far as Dejan Kulusevski is concerned, Ange transformed him from a wide player to a central midfield attacker, and he was Tottenham’s standout performer in the first half of last campaign.
It remains to be seen what role Kulusevski will have under Frank, but if the new boss decides to use him on the right flank as a competitor to Johnson, the Lilywhites should then have enough options out wide. With Pedro Porro and Djed Spence, the club are also well-stocked in the right-back department.
Keeping these factors in mind, it would not make much sense for Tottenham to splash the cash on Weah. Instead, they must look to sign a creative midfielder who can cover and compete with Maddison next season, making Eze the ideal target.
