Tottenham boss’s involvement forces Manchester United to rush £60m deal

Fabrizio Romano believes Manchester United are still ahead in the race to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, despite Thomas Frank pushing Tottenham Hotspur to sign the Cameroonian this summer. United have prioritised the attacking department at the early stages of the window as they prepare for a squad overhaul.

Man United lost the Europa League final to Spurs and cannot let the London club outperform them in the market. Furthermore, prolonging any transfer deal is counterproductive for the Red Devils as they seek many transactions before the market shuts.

Under Ruben Amorim, the United team showed vulnerability in many positions, with players failing to adjust to his tactical philosophies. The Red Devils have already added Matheus Cunha and intend to bolster their attacking department further after potentially signing Mbeumo.

We recently covered the arrival of Frank at Spurs, immediately pushing the London club towards a deal for the Cameroonian. According to Romano (via GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast), United are still ahead of Tottenham in signing Mbeumo despite Frank’s arrival. He said:

“For sure, there is appreciation from Thomas Frank. And so it’s quite obvious to discuss a target like Mbeumo for Tottenham, because he’s one of the names they discussed internally as soon as he [Frank] signed his contract as new Tottenham manager. “So it’s obvious in football to see these kind of situations, but my understanding is that Manchester United remain, at the moment, in control of the situation, in conversation with Brentford, the club-to-club talking almost on daily basis, trying to find a solution.”

Brentford rejected the opening £55m bid from United for Mbeumo, demanding around £60m for the 25-year-old prolific attacker. Mbeumo made 42 appearances for the Bees in all competitions last season, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists.

United want the 25-year-old to play alongside Cunha in the 3-4-2-1 formation, ahead of two central midfielders and behind the main forward. The potential of having Cunha and Mbeumo together is an attractive thought for the United fanbase, who endured recent mediocrity.

  • Throughout the reign of former manager Erik ten Hag, United scored fewer goals, with their attackers failing consistently. United need to make sure that the persistent problem ends before the next season, and Mbeumo is a fantastic answer. The prolific right-winger is both Premier League proven and operating in his prime to produce consistent results.
