Tottenham have endured one of their worst campaigns ever.

Tottenham have been nothing short of awful for the majority of the ongoing 2025/26 season, and while the Lilywhites have already shuffled the head coaches twice in order to drag themselves out of the relegation battle, questions are being asked about the personnel beyond the man on the touchline.

And this is where you ideally start with the man who has been tasked with laying the groundwork for the structure and players beneath it all, as the ongoing season has come out in a way that leaves very few places for him to hide.

Johan Lange has been quite a key figure behind the scenes since arriving at Tottenham in November 2023. He has been doing his bits with transfer, strategy and long-term planning at N17. Tottenham have seen big-money signings consistently failing to deliver, and key exits have left gaps in the roster that were not quite filled despite the fans screaming for those signings day in and day out, and yet the decision-makers barely decide on cementing that crack. The overall balance of the squad has also been mayhem.

And this is where Tottenham’s recent appointment of Roberto de Zerbi comes into picture.

Lange puts all eggs in RDZ basket

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Lange has been key in bringing the former Brighton boss to Hotspur Way. And it looks like he is risking everything on his success, with a recent report from Ben Jacobs claiming how his position at N17 is under threat.

The decision to bring in De Zerbi is quite bold in itself, especially on a long-term lucrative contract when the club is staring at a possible drop. And by the looks of it, his success at Tottenham now carries a weight which will go far beyond results alone because now this is not just another managerial appointment like Thomas Frank or Igor Tudor; it is one that can also define Lange’s future at Hotspur Way.

Tottenham are already linked with possible Lange replacements

When the news reaches the point where it is right now, generally speculations tend to follow quite quickly, and that is also the case here, plans, as names like Thiago Pinto and Dougie Freedman have already been mentioned as possible successors.

You don’t see big clubs allowing uncertainties to be around for a long time without contingency plans and it looks like Tottenham are already planning as well, be it with Lange or without him.
