Thomas Frank wants Daniel Levy to keep Son Heung-min at Tottenham next season

It is fair to say that Son Heung-min failed to live up to his usual standards in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt last season.

The South Korean international looked like a pale shadow of his former self for large parts of the 2024/25 campaign, despite him contributing to 11 goals and 12 assists in 46 outings across all competitions. He also struggled with injury problems, and fans are worried the 33-year-old’s form is steadily declining.

This has led to endless speculation surrounding the Spurs skipper’s future. Son Heung-min has been linked with several clubs in recent weeks, including a move to Saudi Arabia or Turkey. As the forward has entered the final year of his contract, there have been reports about the influential figures at Tottenham willing to cash him in this summer.

Football London journalist Alasdair Gold feels Son has “earned the right” to decide his future after representing the North London club for 10 long years with pride and gaiety. Now, the new development surrounding the South Korean’s future is set to surprise the supporters.

Thomas Frank is open to keeping Son Heung-min at Tottenham

According to an exclusive report from Football Asian, new Tottenham gaffer Thomas Frank is ready to continue relying on Son’s leadership skills at White Hart Lane.

The Dane is open to keeping the veteran forward at the club next season, having made it clear to the chairman Daniel Levy that he wants the current captain to remain in North London. And Levy is also ready to respect the player’s desire to stay.

Son is no more the force he was during his prime years, which is why he is expected to have a reduced playing role under Thomas Frank next season. The South Asian ace would need to accept that his powers are waning, and with the club boasting of some quality young wingers in Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert and Mikey Moore, there is every chance of Son not starting regularly for the Lilywhites.

The player recently turned down a move to the Major Soccer League (MLS) club Los Angeles FC. The aforementioned report adds that while Son is open to playing in MLS after his European career, he would prefer to do so as a free agent. Nonetheless, the club’s iconic No.7 has not ruled out penning a new contract, and should he get back his mojo over the next season, Tottenham would be willing to offer him a fresh extension.

In a season where Champions League football is on the agenda, a player of Son’s class, leadership and experience could be extremely valuable for Frank rebuilding the club as per his vision and ideas.
