Tottenham have appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their permanent head coach.

In an official statement, Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that they have appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach. The 46-year-old will officially complete the switch once he secures a work permit.

The Italian has signed a five-year deal with the North London club, replacing Igor Tudor at the helm. Tudor was shown the door on Sunday afternoon after failing to win a single Premier League game during his time in the dugout. Roberto De Zerbi arrives in N17 at a time when the club are reeling in the Premier League, with just a point separating Spurs and West Ham in 18th.

Tottenham will expect an immediate impact from the 46-year-old as they continue their fight to maintain their Premier League status this season.

Roberto De Zerbi expresses his delight at joining Tottenham

De Zerbi has expressed his delight upon joining Tottenham. He told the club’s official website:

“I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world. In all my discussions with the Club’s leadership, their ambition for the future has been clear – to build a team capable of reaching great achievements, and to do that playing a style of football that excites and inspires our supporters.

“I am here because I believe in that ambition and have signed a long-term contract to give everything to deliver it.

“Our short-term priority is to climb the Premier League table, which will be the complete focus until the final whistle of the last game of the season. I’m looking forward to getting out on the training pitch and working with these players to achieve that.”

Sporting director Johan Lange has now opened up on the appointment of De Zerbi. He explained the club’s long-term interest in the Italian, while highlighting his coaching qualities and experience at the top level.

“Roberto was our number one target for the summer, and we are very pleased to be able to bring him in now,” Johan Lange explained.

“He is one of the most creative and forward-thinking coaches in world football, and brings with him a wealth of experience at the highest level, including in the Premier League.”

Spurs hopeful of staying in the Premier League under De Zerbi

Rather than turning to another interim option to see out the final seven games of the season, the Spurs leadership team made a bold decision to go for a permanent head coach. They have shown intent by convincing one of the exciting young coaches in Europe, De Zerbi, to become a part of their project in possibly the worst state of the club.

After days of negotiations, given De Zerbi’s initial preference to assess his options in the summer, the 46-year-old accepted Tottenham’s proposal, despite relegation being a realistic prospect. It is a big challenge for the former Marseille tactician now. His reputation is at stake, but he will view it as a glorious opportunity to prove his managerial credentials.

It is a high-risk, high-reward appointment from the Lilywhites. Fans will be praying it works out and the club makes a great escape from the jaws of relegation.
