Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League triumph in May granted them a place in the UEFA Champions League, and Daniel Levy will look to overhaul a squad that struggled in the Premier League and finished a lowly 17th.
It is clear the squad new boss Thomas Frank has inherited from Ange Postecoglou is not good enough to compete across multiple fronts next term, let alone Premier League. Thus, fresh faces are required to kickstart a new era at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Daniel Levy is expected to compound on his recent years’ transfer strategy of investing in young, hungry and exciting talent with high potential, which can reap benefits at Spurs in the long term. And looking to continue to stick to that policy, the Lilywhites may perhaps raid the Italian market this summer.
According to an exclusive report from CaughtOffside, Tottenham are among many clubs showing an interest in signing Parma youngster Giovanni Leoni. They are even considering making an opening offer in the region of €25m for the 18-year-old.
Giovanni Leoni enjoyed his breakout season in Parma colours this past term, making 17 appearances in Serie A after coming back from a strong loan spell with Sampdoria in Serie B. The Italy Under-19 international’s performances have caught the attention of big Serie A clubs such as Napoli, Inter Milan and AC Milan, while Tottenham are joined by Premier League rivals Bournemouth and Wolves.
Parma are wary that they have a gem in their hands in the form of Leoni but they could also be under considerable pressure to sell if the right offer comes in. The Rome native has shown glimpses of being a special defensive talent, and while Spurs are planning to table an offer of around €25m, the aforementioned report adds that Parma are demanding at least €35 million.
Spurs are in need of defensive reinforcements in the wake of their last season’s troubles. In addition, Cristian Romero’s future remains up in the air , Radu Dragusin is out with an ACL injury and Micky van de Ven has been injury prone. Thus, it is quite obvious why the North Londoners should invest in defence, and Leoni would represent a fantastic, long-term investment.
Standing at 6ft 5ins tall, aerially strong, good reader of the game and comfortable with the ball at both his feet, Leoni has the raw ingredients to thrive in the hustle and bustle of Premier League football. Under a new boss in Frank who emphasises in having a strong defence and has helped in developing many players at his former club Brentford, Tottenham might become an attractive destination for the Parma prodigy ahead of Italian bigwigs.
