There is an increasing possibility that Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new central defender will continue as we approach the January transfer window in a few months’ time.
The north Londoners tried to land a senior centre-back after signing Japanese prospect Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale in July. They wanted to add a reliable player who can cover and compete with first-choice centre-back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
In search for a new defender, the Lilywhites had set their sights on Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite. The Englishman was instrumental in turning Everton’s fortunes around following David Moyes’ return to the dugout after 12 years last season. His performances had caught several top clubs in England and across the continent; however, he snubbed all the interest and decided to extend his stay with the Toffees by signing a new contract until 2030.
Unfortunately, Jarrad Branthwaite suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury that ruled out him out at the end of last season. He is yet to make an appearance for the Merseyside club this season, with Michael Keane featuring in the England international’s absence. Yet, clubs are preparing to make moves for him next year.
Now, according to a report from CaughtOffside, Manchester United are preparing a £60m bid for Branthwaite in January. Tottenham and Liverpool could also be in the mix for the 23-year-old’s signature, but Manchester United currently seem to be showing the strongest interest.
It makes sense that Spurs remain interested in Branthwaite, who would be ideal to challenge and cover for Van de Ven on the left of a back four. Van de Ven has struggled with thigh problems since arriving at the club in the summer of 2023, so Thomas Frank must manage his fitness carefully and avoid overusing him.
Keeping that in mind, it is imperative Spurs compete with Man United and Liverpool for the Everton man’s signature when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
All the top clubs in England are admirers of the English international’s talent and potential. Man United are planning to bid for the player in the winter window, which should put Spurs on red alert. Given the defender is a key player for Moyes and has a long-term contract, Everton are unlikely to sanction his exit midway through the campaign.
From Tottenham’s perspective, it will be challenging to sign Branthwaite when English giants Man United and Liverpool are in the race. The Carlisle-born talent will harbour hopes of competing with best players, playing in the Champions League and winning trophies, which is tough to see happening at Everton at least in the next few years. By offering Champions League football and a platform to hone his skills under Frank, Spurs could put a tempting project in front of Branthwaite next year.
If Spurs want to compete with the best clubs, they must bring in the best talents from England and Europe. And the youngster is a talent who could transform Frank’s defensive unit.
