Tottenham want to sign Sevilla forward in strong form in La Liga this season.

Tottenham Hotspur continue to search for options to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.

The need for reinforcements has been accentuated by the sudden, alarming dip in form of Thomas Frank’s side. While defensive fragility and midfield gaps need addressing, there remains room for attackers who can bring the cutting edge and guile in the final third.

The Tottenham forwards have massively underperformed this season thus far. Richarlison is the club’s top scorer with seven goals, leading the Tottenham attack regularly in the absence of Dominic Solanke. Following persistent ankle problems that led to a minor surgery in October, Solanke has managed only two substitute appearances under Thomas Frank. In addition, wide players such as Wilson Odobert, Brennan Johnson and Mathys Tel have not been consistent at all.

In a bid to improve the attacking options, Sevilla’s Ruben Vargas has emerged as a target for the north Londoners. Despite Sevilla blowing hot and cold this season, the Switzerland international has been enjoying a fine individual campaign. He has supplied three goals and four assists in 12 La Liga outings thus far.

Leeds United preparing bid for Ruben Vargas

Vargas has drawn attention with his performances in the Spanish top-flight, with Tottenham among interested parties. However, according to a report from Fichajes, Leeds United are preparing an offer close to €20 million for the Sevilla attacker. The Whites have identified him as a key piece in their attack, trying to bring him to Elland Road in January to strengthen their chances of staying in the top flight.

Sevilla are monitoring the developments surrounding their star winger closely. The Andalusian side do not consider him untouchable and could be open to accepting offers in January, provided they fulfil the monetary demands. The report adds that Leeds United are set to face competition from Spurs and Aston Villa for the signing of Vargas, who is ready to take the next big step in his career.

Should Tottenham go all out for Vargas?

Leeds feel Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha aren’t sufficient up front to fire them to safety. They need another body in the striker department, and Vargas is the player the Yorkshire giants are planning to bring in.

As for Aston Villa, they are flying high in the Premier League. After a slow start to the campaign, the Villans have surprised many by moving up to third in the table. Their interest in Vargas isn’t surprising, as Unai Emery wants to add depth to his attacking ranks for the gruelling second half of the season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s problems in the final third have been well-documented. The lack of threat from wide areas has hamstrung the north London side, especially off the left, and a player of Vargas’ directness, speed and flair could address that glaring issue. In comparison to Leeds and Villa, Spurs could tempt the Sevilla man by immediately offering him Champions League football, as well as the chance to shine in the Premier League.

As Leeds appear determined to land the Swiss, the time is right for Tottenham to strike. As per recent reports, Frank wants the board to target experienced players who will improve his starting XI, and Vargas would be a smart option to consider. However, he has been out with a hamstring injury since the end of November, so Spurs could check his availability before deciding whether to table a bid or not.
