The Europa League success that Tottenham has endured will not mean anything if they do not build on it next season. The Lilywhites need to bring in reinforcements in the summer after enduring a disastrous domestic campaign. Ange Postecoglou’s men managed to end the season on a high, but the lack of positive results in the Premier League put the club on notice for all the wrong reasons.
One of the many reasons why Spurs struggled domestically in this campaign was injuries to key defenders. At one point, the entire first-choice back four was forced to be on the side-lines due to various injury issues. This jeopardised the North London club’s season massively and put Ange’s men under pressure during a critical part of the season.
The Spurs manager was forced to play inexperienced players at the back to take control of the situation. Key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were ruled out for most parts of the season. Backup defender Radu Dragusin also ruptured his ACL midway through the season. The North London club learnt it the hard way to have depth in their squad while competing in various competitions.
There is no surprise that Tottenham are looking to add more quality to their defence in the summer. With Cristian Romero facing an uncertain future at N17, Daniel Levy is forced to bring in a new centre-back to fill the defensive void left behind by the Argentina international.
As per Mail Online, Spurs are interested in signing AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori in the summer. Daniel Levy sees the England international as the perfect replacement of Romero and wants to bring him to N17 to kickstart a new era at the club. It is also important to note that Milan are open to sell the 27-year-old for the right price as they look to cash in on a few players after enduring a tough campaign.
The aforementioned report also states that Tottenham will first try to land Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi in the summer. If the Lilywhites fail in convincing the Palace captain to come to N17, then the focus will shift to Tomori. The AC Milan defender is also open for a move as he wants to test himself in a new environment.
It is fair to say that Fikayo Tomori would be integrated straight into the starting eleven to partner up with Micky van de Ven if he comes to N17. The England international has become a mainstay at the heart of the defence for Milan during his stay in Italy. Tomori has also made a name for himself after leaving his comfort zone and testing himself in new country at a young age.
He would be an ideal fit at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou. The 27-year-old likes to play out from the back and he is comfortable on the ball. His positional awareness is second to none and he likes to engage in ground duels while contending for the ball. Tomori also likes to carry the ball out from the back and cut open the midfield line through his accurate passes. However, the AC Milan defender has disciplinary issues and he often plays on the edge.
