West Ham United are looking to part ways with Edson Alvarez amid Tottenham transfer links

Tottenham Hotspur need to restart and refresh in the summer. The Lilywhites have performed well below expectations and are enduring their worst-ever campaign in the Premier League. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has managed to break all sorts of unwanted records at the club, and his team are well on course to finish the season in the bottom half of the league table.

It does not take a genius to understand where the problem lies for the North London club. Ange’s men have struggled to grind out results and have lost the game by the narrowest of margins. The Lilywhites have now surpassed the record for most defeats by a one-goal margin in a season (15 losses). It just shows the luck has not been on their side, and the individual mistakes have not helped their cause either.

However, Spurs have still managed to reach the Europa League semi-finals and are within touching distance of ending their 17-year-long wait to win a major trophy. If Ange’s men manage to win the competition, it would ensure Champions League football for next season. That would be significant for the club in their bid to reshape the squad in the summer.

Tottenham interested in West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez

Tottenham need to bring in reinforcements in the summer. Daniel Levy is preparing to lose a few key players in the coming months after a disastrous season. Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, and Rodrigo Bentancur are all linked with a move away from the club. Spurs will need to find replacements quickly if any one of them leaves N17 for pastures new.

Now, it is reported journalist Kery Ruiz via X that Tottenham are interested in bringing West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez to N17. The Mexico international has fallen down the pecking order under Graham Porter and has been given the green light from the Hammers to find a new club. This comes after it was suggested that the defensive midfielder was involved in a training ground bust-up with the English manager recently.

However, the Hammers have set a price tag of £30m for the 27-year-old. The Stratford-based club are looking to recover the fees that they paid for the Mexican in 2023 following his arrival from Ajax. Tottenham also face competition from Monaco and Dortmund for the West Ham No.19.

A good move for Tottenham?

Ange Postecoglou’s side needs midfield reinforcements after struggling in the middle of the park throughout this season. However, a panic buy should not be the answer to their problems. There are many players in the market that will be available for a cut-price deal in the summer, and Daniel Levy should be looking to sign one of these players.

Since his arrival at the London Stadium, Alvarez has been a mainstay in the West Ham matchday squad. However, the Mexico international has struggled to make an impact in games and has often looked out of depth in the Premier League. But, it is also important to remember that he is playing in a very inconsistent side that is sitting 17th in the Premier League table.

Should Tottenham go in for him? The Lilywhites could do better if they looked at other players in the market instead. The asking price is high, and Alvarez does not suit Ange Postecoglou’s system. The 27-year-old has a slow recovery pace and will struggle to play in a high-tempo team. Spurs rely on counter-attacks, and Alvarez would struggle to get used to the pace of the game.
