Tottenham Hotspur backed new head coach Thomas Frank well in the transfer market, bringing in as many as seven summer signings to rebuild his squad.
Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani have joined to bolster the forward line, while Joao Palhinha’s arrival on loan from Bayern Munich has added steel and physicality to the midfield unit. However, it looks like the Lilywhites were keen to sign another midfielder after the acquisition of Palhinha.
According to a report from TEAMTalk, Tottenham made a late summer move to sign talented Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Senny Mayulu. However, Paris Saint-Germain were reluctant to sell the teenager, who is also understood to be on the radar of Manchester City and Chelsea.
Regarded extremely highly at Parc des Princes, Senny Mayulu marked his breakout season at PSG by scoring in the Champions League final 5-0 rout of Inter Milan last season. He came off the bench and iced the cake with a near-post goal, beating Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer at the near post. The teenager ended up making 33 appearances across all competitions, netting six goals and registering three assists.
The versatile midfielder’s performances over the course of the season caught the eye of Tottenham. The aforementioned report adds that the Lilywhites contacted PSG over Mayulu in the final weeks of the summer transfer window to understand if there was any chance of the young talent becoming available. The Frenchman still has two years on his current contract, although the Ligue 1 giants are not prepared to consider any offers as they view him as a future star.
Tottenham’s interest Mayulu is not surprising. The France under-20 international is one of the best talents to emerge from the PSG academy, so there is a reason why Luis Enrique’s club are reluctant to sell him.
From Spurs’ perspective, Thomas Frank already has talented young midfielders Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall in his squad. Gray, in particular, is waiting on the wings for his chances after operating everywhere across the backline last season under former boss Ange Postecoglou. The Durham native deserves a run of games in his favoured midfield position to showcase his talent.
Whether or not the Lilywhites reignite their interest in the PSG sensation during the winter window remains to be seen, but Frank should utilise Gray and Bergvall throughout the campaign.
