Tottenham are facing the real prospect of dropping into the second division if they fail to return to winning ways in the Premier League. The Lilywhites are now winless in their last 13 league matches, making them the only top-flight team yet to secure a league victory since the turn of the year. They are currently the most out-of-form side in the country and are struggling to build any momentum under Igor Tudor.
Just nine months ago, the North Londoners were celebrating their Europa League triumph after defeating Manchester United in the final in Bilbao. It was a historic achievement for Spurs, who also secured Champions League qualification as a result. However, the same team finished 17th in the Premier League under Ange Postecoglou, highlighting clear weaknesses within the squad that the club failed to address during the summer transfer window.
Fast forward nine months, and Spurs are on the verge of relegation from the Premier League this season. They are just one point above the drop zone in 17th place, following a 0-3 home defeat to fellow relegation candidates Nottingham Forest last weekend. It appears that the situation is becoming increasingly dire for the North Londoners, who cannot seem to find a way back to winning form under Igor Tudor in recent weeks.
Tottenham have managed to win just two of their last 23 league matches this season. Their most recent victory came against Crystal Palace in December, which makes their current struggles even more alarming. The Lilywhites have been unable to find a way to secure all three points in recent months. They parted ways with Thomas Frank earlier last month after it became evident that the Danish tactician was not getting the best out of his players. Now, his successor, Igor Tudor, is also under pressure at N17 after failing to win any of his first six league matches in charge.
Tim Krul now believes that Spurs are not ‘too big to go down’ as they continue to struggle for positive results in the Premier League. Speaking to the BBC, Krul said,
“It was amazing to see the fans showing that support [before the game] because there has been this disconnect for months with the players. After getting that point at Liverpool, everybody thought that could be the turning point, then following it up by beating Atletico – and then probably the biggest game for Tottenham in the past few weeks, they just didn’t turn up.”
The former Premier League keeper added,
“What a win for Forest. With the Premier League as it is today, nobody is too big to go down. You’ve got the top six or top eight, but everybody under that at the start of the season just looks to get safety and 40 points is normally that golden number. Tottenham were close last year, they had warning signs last year and winning the Europa League patched over a few cracks.”
As Tim Krul rightly points out, the Spurs faithful were not at fault for the team’s disappointing performance against Nottingham Forest. The draw against Liverpool and the win over Atletico Madrid were expected to act as a turning point for the Lilywhites under Igor Tudor ahead of the crucial clash against Forest. However, the players failed to rise to the occasion and were outplayed by Vitor Pereira’s side. Krul believes that the situation looks bleak for the North Londoners, as every team in the Premier League is highly competitive, making it difficult for Spurs to avoid relegation this season.
The international break may have arrived at the right time for the Lilywhites. A three-week pause from club football could provide the players with an opportunity to mentally reset as they prepare for a crucial period that could define the North London club’s short-term and long-term future. They must return to winning ways in the coming months, and the only way to achieve that is by playing with renewed belief and confidence, starting with the away clash against Sunderland in their next league game.
