Tottenham Hotspur made it three wins from three in pre-season, as Roberto De Zerbi prepares for his first full season in North London.
Spurs needed a penalty shoot-out to beat Sydney FC on Wednesday. Mathys Tel gave Tottenham the lead with a stunning free-kick just before the half-hour mark, with Takahiro Sekine levelling the scores in the second half. Tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the match went to penalties with Roberto De Zerbi’s men running out 4-2 winners.
When the club announced the starting XI and the squad to face Sydney FC, Dominic Solanke was nowhere to be seen. Journalist Chris Cowlin revealed on X that Dominic Solanke was limping into the hotel on Tuesday after training.
It is perhaps a minor thing, and neither Roberto De Zerbi nor anyone else associated with the club have commented on it. However, given Solanke’s recent history with ankle-related issues, Tottenham fans have every reason to be fearful.
The England international struggled with an ankle issue all season. The 28-year-old missed the start of the 2025/26 campaign after undergoing ankle surgery, sidelining him for almost 140 days. During that time, he missed 33 games. Solanke returned to action in the second week of January, and then he got injured again by the end of the campaign.
The centre-forward was limited to just 20 appearances in all competitions, of which 15 were in the Premier League. He could muster only six goals, with Richarlison shouldering the goalscoring burden for large parts of the season. With Solanke spotted limping a day before the friendly vs. Sydney FC, it does not bode well for De Zerbi and Tottenham ahead of the start of the new campaign.

When fully fit and running, Solanke offers Tottenham a natural goal threat in and around the box. The Englishman possesses a mix of technical and physical qualities that align seamlessly with De Zerbi’s insistence on vertical, high-tempo possession football. However, the 28-year-old’s fitness since the start of 2025 hasn’t been great, leading to extremely inconsistent displays.
Solanke’s latest injury worry is a reminder that he is just so difficult to rely on for a variety of reasons. De Zerbi should be concerned, knowing the striker’s fragility since last year. This also calls for the hierarchy to step up their search for a reliable No.9, as De Zerbi simply cannot enter the 2026/27 campaign with two injury-prone, volatile strikers in his squad.
