Tottenham backed to quickly agree on a new contract with Rodrigo Bentancur in a bid to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year
Rodrigo Bentancur has been one of the impressive performers for Tottenham Hotspur in their bright start to the 2025/26 season.
The 28-year-old has quickly become an important player for new boss Thomas Frank, clocking 199 minutes across three Premier League games. He was a part of the midfield trio that was crucial to Spurs’ fantastic 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last month, with former Premier League striker Alan Shearer waxing lyrical about him, Joao Palhinha and Pape Matar Sarr.
However, the Uruguay international’s long-term future at N17 remains uncertain. He has entered the final year of his contract (Transfermarkt) and there is currently no sign of him signing new terms with Tottenham. Rodrigo Bentancur will be eligible to strike a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1, so the Lilywhites need to be wary of his contractual situation given Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were showing interest in him earlier this year.
Spurs would certainly not want to lose Bentancur on a free transfer at the end of the season. His importance has grown leaps and bounds under Thomas Frank and is arguably now one of the first names on the teamsheet. However, concerns remain regarding the lack of security surrounding his current as well as long-term position in north London.
Keeping that in mind, reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham wants the club to quickly reach an agreement with Bentancur, but feels money could be a possible obstacle.
“We (Tottenham) want him to stay,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“You can imagine the likes of Atletico Madrid and others will be fully aware of that situation, that they can sign him on a free in less than three months.
“We have to close that deal. “I’m surprised that it hasn’t happened as yet, but he’s probably holding out for his money.
“The more performances that he puts in, like he did at Man City, against PSG and in the pre-season friendlies, the more his value increases, and he probably wants a decent contract.”
Bentancur has had injury and off-field issues during his time at Tottenham, hampering his progress. The South American star seems to have put those problems behind him and is thriving in Frank’s system. He is in his prime and Tottenham would benefit from his services in the next few years if they can agree on new terms.
At 28, Bentancur would be bound to ask for improved terms from the north London outfit as this possibly becomes his last big paycheck. The Uruguayan’s value to the team has grown, which would make it disastrous if he is to leave the club on a free transfer in 2026. With that in mind, it is completely down to Tottenham to evaluate how much they value him for the next few years.
