Tottenham Hotspur were quite desperate to add more attacking firepower to the roster in the recently concluded summer transfer window, and the North Londoners were quite desperate when the clock came to the final hours of the window when Daniel Levy pulled a rabbit out of his hat to secure a surprise signing of Randal Kolo Muani, who comes to Hotspur Way on a vanilla loan transfer.
The North Londoners have held long-term admiration of the French striker, given how the Lilywhites also tried to sign him back in January when Ange Postecoglou was still in charge of the proceedings at Tottenham. But it was not until the final hours of the recently concluded summer transfer window that Johan Lange and Thomas Frank finally got their man.
And now Tottenham’s technical director has sat down and given us an insight into why the Frenchman was such a key target for Tottenham and where he could line up under Frank in the ongoing campaign season.
Speaking in an interview on the club’s official YouTube channel, Lange went on to speak highly about the deal which ended up bringing the French striker to Hotspur Way and then went on to speak on exactly what Muani brings to N17. He said:
“I think with Randal, first of all, I’m extremely pleased that we managed to get it over the line. Credit to everybody at the club for acting quickly when a player of that level becomes available.
“Randal is versatile, so he can play across the front line. He gives Thomas and his staff so many options across the front line, where most of our players can play more than one position.
“Again with Randal, coming in here, he’s a player we’ve followed a long, long time, very successful in the French national team a few years ago.
“He’s made his move to Paris, then in the last six months, he also played with success at Juve. He’s played at the World Cup, played Champions League and played for big clubs, so we are very, very pleased and excited that he’s here. He will be another great addition to the squad for the season.”
The PSG striker arrives at Tottenham at quite a critical time given how the North Londoners are dealing with a Dominic Solanke injury, which leaves only Richarlison as a candidate to lead the line during the opening weeks of the campaign. And while the Brazilian has been quite impressive for the North Londoners, bringing in Muani can quite unlock Tottenham into a more dynamic side.
With the Frenchman upfront, you don’t lock Tottenham in a shape, given how he has this knack of drifting into wide spaces on the left to stretch defences and dropping into channels to connect play. And this is the kind of fluidity which hands Frank tactical flexibility that Tottenham didn’t have last season.
While it is only a loan signing, Muani can ensure that Tottenham are ready to compete on all fronts in the ongoing campaign while also giving Frank time to ponder the market to bring in a long-term striking talent at Hotspur Way.
