Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a primary target for Manchester United this summer as the Red Devils undergo a midfield overhaul ahead of the new season.
The signing of Ederson from Atalanta already looks to be done with both parties reaching an agreement last month although the Brazilian is not expected to be United’s only signing in the middle of the park.
West Ham United have quoted £80 million for Fernandes this summer, and are desperate to keep him for another season as the Hammers look to make an automatic return to the Premier League.
Other clubs continue to circle, however, including the Red Devils and Real Madrid.
Tottenham Hotspur emerged as a possible suitor for the midfielder earlier this month with the club enquiring about a possible deal.
Now, it appears that Spurs have made considerable progress with Matteo Moretto reporting that the London-based outfit are close to an agreement with Mateus Fernandes surrounding a contract.
The journalist also states that Fernandes is open to a move to Spurs although no official negotiations have taken place between Tottenham and West Ham.
For Manchester United, this news is a major blow and one that could affect their chances of signing the midfielder this summer.
With no official negotiations taking place yet, though, there is still time for the Red Devils to move ahead of Spurs in the race and to ensure that the Portuguese midfielder is wearing the famous red, black, and white of Manchester United next season.
United may now look to move quickly to move ahead of Tottenham and secure a deal although no official reports have emerged about the club’s reaction to this development.
With Bruno Fernandes positive about the midfielder, Manchester United are likely to do everything they can to sign their target. The race is not over yet, but Tottenham appear to have moved ahead for now.
