Injuries and inconsistency, that has been the story of the season for Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou. The Lilywhites managed to rewrite history on both ends of the spectrum after enduring contrasting campaigns in Europe and domestically. Ange’s men managed to end the long-standing trophy drought after winning the Europa League against all odds.
On the other hand, the North London club also suffered their worst ever Premier League campaign till date. Spurs finished the season just a place above the relegation zone and recorded their lowest ever points tally in a single Premier League season. However, it is fair to say that one of the many reasons why the club suffered in domestic competitions is due to injuries to key players.
At one point, the entire backline was sidelined due to injury issues. To make it worse, the Lilywhites were forced to play without their first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario for almost three months after the Italian fractured his ankle midway through the season. Daniel Levy brought in Antonin Kinsky as a backup keeper in January, and it is worth noting that the 22-year-old also failed to make the starting spot his own earlier this year.
Well, Tottenham need to bring in reinforcements in all departments if they want to build on the Europa League success next year. The Lilywhites will be competing in four competitions after ensuring a Champions League spot and they will need depth in their squad to compete for a trophy.
As per The Times, Spurs are interested in signing Liverpool’s back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in the summer. The Lilywhites want to improve the goalkeeping department in this transfer window and are looking to bring in the 26-year-old to compete with Guglielmo Vicario. The Liverpool keeper is also open for a move as he wants regular game-time next season.
The aforementioned report also states that Liverpool are seeking in excess of £20m for Kelleher’s services. Along with Spurs, Brentford and Aston Villa also in the mix for the Irishman. It is important to note that the Lilywhites are currently falling behind in the race for the 26-year-old’s signature as Brentford have guaranteed Kelleher a spot in the starting eleven for next season.
Signing Caoimhin Kelleher would put Guglielmo Vicario’s spot in jeopardy. Bringing in a new goalkeeper is not a priority for Spurs right now as they need to address other important issues in the squad. Daniel Levy will only look to land a new keeper if the financial conditions are right and if the player can actually be useful next season.
Caoimhin Kelleher would have been an ideal fit for Tottenham. The Ireland international has time and again proved his quality at Anfield and he is arguably the best backup goalkeeper in Europe. His shot-stopping ability is second to none and he can comfortably play out from the back. The 26-year-old’s distribution skills are also important in building an attack from the back and he constantly commands his box during games.
