Tottenham Hotspur need reinforcements in multiple areas of their pitch this summer.
The future of Ange Postecoglou has now been decided, but irrespective of who their head coach will be next season, new signings are a necessity. The North Londoners have started well by officially announcing the permanent capture of centre-back Kevin Danso in a £21 million deal from RC Lens. But, they clearly need more options in central defence to avoid last season’s problems.
Cristian Romero is leaning towards leaving Spurs for Atletico Madrid. While securing Champions League football for next season has given the club some leverage to keep hold of him, Romero has a desire to play in La Liga. Regardless of if the Argentinean international stays or leaves, Tottenham would need another defensive option to cope with next season’s demands. And it looks like they have identified one.
According to an exclusive report from CaughtOffside, Tottenham are set to battle it out with Premier League rivals Arsenal and Newcastle United for the signing of AS Monaco defender Wilfried Singo. Atletico Madrid and Napoli are also keeping tabs on the player, who has a possibility of leaving AS Monaco this summer.
Wilfried Singo has been a consistent performer for AS Monaco since arriving from Torino in the summer of 2023, racking up 60 appearances thus far. He has operated both as a right-back and centre-back for the Ligue 1 side, chipping in with four goals and as many assists. The Ivory Coast international largely played in central defence this past season, as Monaco finished third in Ligue 1 and qualified for the Champions League.
The aforementioned report adds Monaco want around €35m for the 24-year-old, whose contract at the Principality Stadium does not expire until 2028.
However, Tottenham’s interest in Singo raises eyebrows given their current right-back options. Pedro Porro and Djed Spence are already part of the squad, presenting stiff competition for the right-back role. Perhaps, the Hotspur Way bosses view the African talent as an option to bolster the central defensive unit and improve the squad’s depth next season. And given he performed very well as a leader of the Monaco defence this past season, it would make sense.
At 24, the ex-Torino man is far away from his best years. Yet, he could make an instant impact for the Lilywhites thanks to his physicality, technical skills and versatility. That said, Spurs must be all over Singo’s signing and not hesitate to meet Monaco’s €35m valuation.
