Tottenham Hotspur’s bright start to the season has faded following the recent run of results.
The north Londoners ended their run of consecutive draws in the Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 win over newly promoted Leeds United at Elland Road before the October international break. Thomas Frank would have wanted his boys to build on that result after the break, but it has not gone according to the scripts. The defeat to Aston Villa and goalless draw with AS Monaco has raised questions on Tottenham’s lack of creativity and cutting edge in the final third.
What is worrying that the Lilywhites have been very poor at home this season. They have won just one Premier League game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with their attackers struggling to create chances and score goals at regularity. The Dane’s side are missing that extra something in the final third, despite the impressive performances of Mohammed Kudus.
Since arriving in a £55m deal from West Ham this summer, Mohammed Kudus has been the brightest spark in Tottenham’s attack. The Ghana international broke his Spurs duck in the 2-1 win over Leeds earlier this month, while he has already supplied five assists in all competitions thus far.
The decision to bring Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham is proving to be a master stroke. The 25-year-old currently leads the Premier League assists chart, showing why the north Londoners were wise to invest in him. Thomas Frank has placed great trust in the African attacker, who has lifted the technical flooring of the side.
This Tottenham side is undergoing transition, having seen big names such as Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, and Son Heung-min depart the club in the last two years. However, the supporters have found a new hero in Kudus, and what fills them with more joy is the fact that the club managed to lure him away from bitter London rivals West Ham.
Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has now given his honest verdict on Kudus. The English pundit admits that he wanted to see the Ghana star in a Spurs shirt and his desire has been fulfilled. He feels the 25-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s “top players” this year.
“(Mohamed) Kudus for me was probably the main one. I wanted him to come to Tottenham,” Jermain Defoe exclusively told Flashscore.
“Obviously, when they got the deal done, it’s amazing and he’s been one of the top players in the Premier League this year.”
Frank has been extremely pleased with Kudus at Spurs. The African talent has been a breath of fresh air for Tottenham, bringing zest, fight, flair, creativity and dynamism to their attack. It is not just his output going forward but also the hard yards he puts in off the ball that makes him such a quintessential winger for the Danish boss.
There is still a lot more to come from the ex-Ajax man. The more he gets used to his teammates and the system, the better the 25-year-old would get. However, our gaffer must manage Kudus’ workload well as he cannot afford to overplay and potentially lose him to an injury. With fixtures set to come thick and fast, keeping the versatile attacker fit and firing has to be one of Frank’s top agendas.
