Guglielmo Vicario has been Tottenham Hotspur’s undisputed No.1 since arriving from Italian club Empoli back in 2023. The 29-year-old has not managed to convince the fans with his performances that he should be the club’s long-term first-choice goalkeeper.
Over recent months, it has been widely reported that Inter Milan are making advances in a deal to sign Guglielmo Vicario from Spurs this summer, as they hunt for a new No.1 to replace Yann Sommer. The Italian international has reportedly already agreed personal terms with Inter Milan ahead of a possible summer move. The Serie A club’s sporting director had even flown to London to hold discussions with the player in March.
Despite his inconsistent performances, Vicario has been a constant between the sticks until recently, when he picked up a hernia injury. He underwent a hernia surgery during the March international break, allowing Antonin Kinsky another chance to step in and redeem himself after his beleaguered Champions League debut against Atletico Madrid last month.
Vicario is Inter Milan’s primary target, a highly-rated goalkeeper in Italy with solid experience. They want the Tottenham goalkeeper to replace Sommer, whose contract expires at the end of the season. However, the Nerazzurri are now looking beyond Vicario as they keep their options wide open.
According to a report from Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile has emerged as an alternative target to Vicario for Inter. Interestingly, Elia Caprile had replaced Vicario at Empoli in 2023 before joining Cagliari in 2025, initially on loan before the move was made permanent last summer.
The 24-year-old has been a reliable presence between the sticks for Cagliari, making 33 appearances this season. He has kept seven clean sheets and conceded 47 goals, as Cagliari continue their battle against relegation.
Perhaps Inter have identified Caprile as a younger option and a more value-for-money option than Vicario. Tottenham may also have a similar strategy in mind, with the Cagliari custodian on the North London club’s radar too. Caprile, who left Leeds United permanently in 2022, has been scouted by Spurs this season.
For now, Vicario does remain Inter’s No.1 target. If they cannot agree on a fee with Spurs for Vicario, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Nerazzurri go all out for the pursuit of Caprile. From Tottenham’s perspective, the Cagliari man does fit the profile of a goalkeeper for Roberto De Zerbi’s system. Strong in the air, good command in the box and technically sound, he would represent a long-term fix to Spurs’ goalkeeping conundrum.
However, a possible move for Caprile would be contingent on De Zerbi’s club staying in the top flight.
