Tottenham Hotspur are working behind the scenes to try and find players to improve Thomas Frank’s squad after he was appointed as Ange Postecoglou’s replacement earlier this month.
Despite their Europa League title triumph in the 2024/2025 season, Spurs need fresh reinforcements to make huge improvements in their Premier League form in the upcoming campaign. The passionate fans are yet to see their club make a new signing since the transfer window opened, except for Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel, whose loan moves were made permanent from RC Lens and Bayern Munich, respectively.
The Lilywhites need more guile and creativity in midfield to avoid the overdependency on the likes of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski. Both Maddison and Kulusevski sustained long-term knee injuries before the Europa League final against Manchester United are unlikely to be part of the upcoming pre-season tour for Spurs. So, it is imperative that they add someone to their midfield unit with the ability of unlocking well-drilled defences.
Now, according to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham are one of several clubs to have approached Liverpool over the potential acquisition of Harvey Elliot. Spurs have enquired about the England Under-21 international amid his likely exit from Anfield.
Harvey Elliot is planning to end his six-year stay at Liverpool following the big-money arrival of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month. The creative midfielder spent most of the time on the fringes under Arne Slot after recovering from a broken foot this past season, starting just two of his 18 Premier League appearances. He only clocked 360 minutes of Premier League action, which is very low for a player who was heavily used by former boss Jurgen Klopp during his tenure at Anfield.
After scoring a wonderful brace against the Netherlands to put England into the European Under-21 Championships’ final against Germany, talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara urged his former club Tottenham to make a move for Elliot. The 22-year-old has two years left on his contract and Liverpool are seeking over £40m this summer. Tottenham are monitoring his situation but could face serious competition for the versatile midfielder.
The aforementioned report adds Newcastle United, Everton, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Leeds United, Brentford, and West Ham United are also Premier League clubs. RB Leipzig’s Head of Global Soccer, Jurgen Klopp, who knows Elliot in and out from his time at Liverpool, could push for his signature.
If the new Tottenham boss decides to use Dejan Kulusevski on the right flank as compared to how Ange Postecoglou transformed him as an attacking No.8 in his system last season, the Lilywhites may then look forward to spending north of £40m for Elliot. The talented Englishman can play both centrally and out wide, adding a different dimension to the Spurs side.
That said, it will be interesting to see whether Daniel Levy tables a formal offer for the Liverpool playmaker in the coming weeks.
