Tottenham Hotspur make contact with Inter Milan target Koni De Winter

Daniel Levy has been prioritising moving for a new centre-back in the ongoing summer transfer window as the 63-year-old club chairman looks to bring in some much-needed depth into the heart of defence, and Genoa defender Koni De Winter has been among many linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Koni de Winter has been linked with a move to N17 for a while (given that Tottenham also tried to sign him in the winter window), and now the reports from iNews suggest that the North Londoners have initiated contact with his current employers with respect to a possible transfer this window.

Inter have expressed interest in Koni de Winter amid his tactical fit at Tottenham

The Belgian has been putting in some serious performances in recent months, and that has led Spurs to express interest in his signature, along with Inter Milan, who remain interested in the 23-year-old as well.

With Thomas Frank, he is highly likely to implement a mid-block structure (in a 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 hybrid) at Tottenham, which should be very reminiscent of the one he had at Brentford but with a higher technical ceiling, and this is where he will look to sign players that give him the ability to operate in a tactical setup that changes shape consistently. And this is where signing the Juventus academy graduate could end up adding a lot to the Dane’s roster, as former Juventus manager Max Allegri has described him as a player with “good technical quality”.

Is signing De Winter a cushion for Romero?

Given that Romero’s future at N17 is still in the blur, it is important for Tottenham to ensure that they have players who are ready to step up in case the club vice-captain chooses to depart this summer (or next). And this is where signing someone with the ability the Belgian international possesses is quite important.

He will bring that much-needed calmness at the back, given that he has the ability to play out from the back without opting for long clearances when facing compounding pressure. And he is quite good at getting the ball in the tight zones and then pinging those simple yet effective passes into the second phase (which could be ideal for the North Londoners who are expected to put in a structured buildup under Thomas Frank).
