Tottenham newboy’s ‘attitude’ problems under the scanner; can Thomas Frank rein him in?

Tottenham Hotspur concluded a deal to bring in Mohammed Kudus on £55 million transfer fee earlier this summer as Daniel Levy brought the Hammers’ forward as a marquee arrival owing to his excellent performances at London Stadium in the past seasons.

The North Londoners had three failed bids in the lead-up to an agreement with West Ham to sign Kudus as the East London side looked to manage their books before diving into the market to make signings of their own. Many consider that price tag as a bargain, while a few are sceptical about what the Ghanaian might end up being at Tottenham.

And while Kudus has already taken part in his first training session donning the Lilywhites badge at Hotspur Way, not everyone is convinced about his ability, as TalkSPORT pundit Perry Groves has issued a warning that the Ghanaian winger could struggle under the no-nonsense approach under Thomas Frank at Tottenham. He went on to question the disciple’s consistency as well as the attitude of the Ajax academy graduate and insisted that the former Brentford manager may not end up tolerating what he saw from Kudus at West Ham.

He said:

“Kudus has gone there, which I think is a bit of a strange signing. Because not last season, the season before, he had a good season. If you ask West Ham fans, they will not be crying their eyes out.

“I saw him a few times again, and his attitude was not great. Under Julen Lopetegui, and when Graham Potter went there, he played him out of position a few times as a false nine.

“But again, his reaction when he is going one versus using the ball, his reaction getting back and helping his team out was not great.

“Now, Thomas Frank will not stand for that whatsoever, but going forward, he can be exciting. The jury is out.”

I think that Perry is concerned about how Kudus will fit into the side at Hotspur Way, especially given his lack of discipline and his work rate. And any minor lapse of it in Thomas Frank’s system can lead to a major structural void as the Dane head coach plays in a collective manner.

Yes, it is not a secret that Kudus will need to compound his consistency and work ethic at Tottenham, but given that he is rapid and has that dribbling ability alongside his attacking instincts, he is a potential game-changing asset at Hotspur Way, especially if Thomas Frank can polish his all-round game.

And for the North Londoners supporters, the fans should expect some growing pains, but they also need to remember that most of Brentford’s success stories under Frank weren’t overnight. If Kudus is ready to commit to the cause, he can end up becoming an exciting long-term investment at N17.
