Tottenham ready contingency plan for Yves Bissouma if he’s not sold in January

Tottenham could be forced to make a critical decision on Yves Bissouma if he is not moved on in the winter transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has gone from bad to worse in the last two months. They have struggled with consistency under Thomas Frank, who has come under immense pressure lately.

Spurs have lacked penetration and guile to unlock rigid defences, as evidenced by a recent damning stat. Thomas Frank’s side have completed just three through balls in the Premier League this season- the lowest of any team in the division. There have also been teething problems in midfield, something the club must look to address in the upcoming winter transfer window.

Yves Bissouma is surplus to requirements for Thomas Frank. He is out of contract at the end of the season and any slim chances of it being extended seemed to have disappeared amid the latest off-field incident.

Last week, the midfielder landed in hot water after he was filmed ‘inhaling laughing gas’ in a recent clip. He was previously suspended by Spurs in August 2024 after the first occurrence. The club has launched an internal investigation into the latest incident, with Frank describing it as “a disciplinary matter.”

Tottenham ready contingency plan if Yves Bissouma is not sold in January

The Lilywhites are keen to cash in on Yves Bissouma during the January transfer window. Everton and West Ham United were tracking the Spurs outcast back in September, but their interest has cooled in recent months.

Now, according to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Tottenham could be forced to trigger a one-year contract extension if they fail to offload him next month, rather than losing the midfielder on a free transfer in the summer.

The 29-year-old is yet to make an appearance for the north Londoners this term, owing to a combination of injury issues and disciplinary problems. The Mali international has also been left out of their Champions League squad.

Tottenham want to get rid of him after what has been a frustrating tenure since his 2022 switch from Brighton and Hove Albion. The combative midfielder has barely shown his best form in a Spurs shirt on the pitch, whilst letting himself down with his behavior and antics off it.

Thus, the possibility of the club extending Bissouma’s contract for another 12 months is just planned to try and protect his transfer value. The report adds the Hotspur Way chiefs’ priority is to sell Bissouma, but they may be forced to take up the contingency plan if clubs do not start circling again in the coming weeks.

Spurs must not extend Bissouma’s stay

Bissouma is among several signings that has flopped at Tottenham. The central midfielder will enter the final six months of his contract, but having failed to live up to the lofty expectations at the club, the Lilywhites must try their best to get rid of him in the New Year. If that does not happen, then they must not end up triggering a one-year extension and continuing the loop of keeping underperforming players at the club.

Under Daniel Levy, Spurs were known for holding on to underperforming players and eventually killing their value. Now that Levy has stepped aside, the newly-formed management team, led by Vinai Venkatesham, must look to make its own impression and fix the deficiencies that has plagued the club over the last two decades.
