Tottenham Hotspur wrapped up their summer transfer business on a strong note, signing quality attackers in the form of Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani.
Spurs’ search for a playmaker came to an end in the last week of the transfer window when Xavi Simons arrived on a five-year deal from RB Leipzig. Randal Kolo Muani followed the Dutchman’s footsteps into the north London club, joining on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain. In addition to the duo, it seemed like the Hotspur Way chiefs wanted to sign a central midfielder during the final days of the transfer window.
This was evidenced by Tottenham’s interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher. The Englishman had a sub-par debut season in La Liga after joining from Chelsea last summer, failing to cement a regular starting berth in the Atletico Madrid XI. Diego Simeone was seemingly open to let the midfielder leave this summer, and Spurs were among the clubs interested in signing him. However, no deal materialised and he has since stayed at Atletico Madrid.
According to Spanish news outlet Fichajes, Tottenham are ready to rival Manchester United for the signing of Conor Gallagher in January. To beat the Red Devils to his signature, Spurs are ready to submit a ‘compelling’ offer for the midfielder when the transfer window reopens.
Gallagher has got a strong market in the Premier League, with Manchester United having made him a top midfield target. Like Tottenham, Man United were keen on signing the 25-year-old in the summer. Ruben Amorim’s club have not cooled their interest in the England international but would face competition from Spurs.
The aforementioned report adds Gallagher is currently watching the developments and does not rule out a return to England. While Diego Simeone values the player’s hard work, commitment and passion, offers from the Premier League clubs could be difficult to turn down for Atletico.
Unlike Man United, Tottenham are competing in four competitions this season. As such, they need a bigger squad in comparison to their Premier League counterparts to challenge in the Premier League and Champions League.
Any addition to the Lilywhites’ squad in the winter window would ideally happen to improve the depth of the squad, unless there are injuries. With regards to Gallagher, Spurs could do well with a player like him to help in the second half of the season and beyond. The England international’s qualities on and off the ball make him a perfect fit in Thomas Frank’s system, and he could be a fine option to compete with the likes of Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr in the Tottenham engine room.
Spurs have long been credited with an interest in Gallagher, and while they did not get his signature in the past window, January would offer them with another opportunity to get their man.
