One of the main reasons why Tottenham endured a disastrous Premier League campaign last season was the lack of depth in defensive positions. The injury crisis at the club did not help the cause either, and Ange Postecoglou was forced to play inexperienced players at the back as the North London club tried to carve out positive results in the top-flight.

Fans hoped that the defensive issues would be rectified in the summer as Spurs aim to kickstart a new era under Thomas Frank. But that has not been the case for now, and the problems are still present as we reach the business-end of the transfer window. Club chairman Daniel Levy has not managed to bring in reinforcements in the summer and fans are worried that the club might miss out on intended targets if they do not act fast.

The ‘left-back’ position needs an urgent upgrade as Spurs look to build on the Europa League success next season. The Lilywhites currently have Destiny Udogie as their primary option for that position, with Djed Spence providing cover. But it is important to note that Spence thrives on the right side more as he is right-footed.

A new full-back is needed urgently as the club only has one natural left-back in its ranks for next season.

The USA international endured a stellar individual campaign last season, and the Lilywhites have taken notice of that. However, finalising deal for the 27-year-old looks tough as the Cottagers have no intentions of losing the left-back. Fulham have also slammed a price tag of £45m for his services as they look to fend off potential suitors.

One can understand why Tottenham are willing to sign the prolific left-back in the summer. Antonee Robinson is described as ‘one of the best full-backs in Europe’ and his consistent performances in the Premier League have showcased why Fulham rate him so highly. He also has his peak years ahead of him, and Marco Silva has no intentions of letting him go as the West London club aim to compete hard next season.

Signing Robinson would bolster the quality of the defence immensely. The 27-year-old would also thrive under Thomas Frank at N17, as the Danish tactician prefers his full-backs to play high and wide. The USA international is exceptional in defending 1v1’s, and has explosive pace to make overlapping runs while maintaining possession. Not only that, but his pin-point crosses will also come in handy for the Lilywhites.
