Thomas Frank has finally arrived at Tottenham Hotspur and transfer plans in North London are now well underway.
The 51-year-old head coach has been suggesting who he wants signed and sold this summer at Spurs, who have to recruit very well to compete on all fronts next season. The Lilywhites must ensure they have a quality first XI and sufficient squad depth to tackle the challenges that come their way.
Tottenham have already announced the permanent signings of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel. Their interest in Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo shows the need for fresh attacking punch next term, especially with Son Heung-min and Richarlison’s futures up in the air. Spurs also want to move Yves Bissouma on and invest in a new central midfielder.
Now, there has been an update on the goalkeeping situation. Tottenham have been doing groundwork on new goalkeeper since the start of 2025, with five top talents shortlisted. AC Milan are keen on current Tottenham No.1 Guglielmo Vicario, and it is believed that the Premier League club are open to letting him go.
Since arriving from Empoli in the summer of 2023, Guglielmo Vicario has not done enough to justify he is good enough to be the club’s No.1. Persistent mistakes either from set-pieces, decision-making or poor distribution has been the story of the Italian international, whose form has reportedly left some within the club worried.
He was solid in the Europa League final vs Manchester United, making a few key saves to keep a clean sheet and help the club win the trophy, but overall Vicario hasn’t been convincing at the club. Keeping that in mind, the Hotspur Way chiefs have been thinking about possible replacements and have drawn up a list of five names.
According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi is among those to have emerged as a target for Spurs. The remaining names are Zion Suzuki, James Trafford, Guillaume Restes and Lucas Chevalier.
Marco Carnesecchi has established himself as one of the reliable goalkeepers in Serie A since getting a foothold in the first-team squad at Atalanta. He had to go out on multiple loans away from Bergamo before becoming a regular in goal for Atalanta since the start of last season.
The 24-year-old has kept 28 clean sheets and conceded 79 goals in 76 appearances for the Bergamo-based outfit thus far. He helped Le Dea win the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen during his first campaign wearing the gloves, and the Italian’s cat-like reflexes and strong shot-stopping ability catching the attention of Tottenham.
Carnesecchi has not yet been capped by Italy, but he was on the bench for his nation’s two most recent World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Moldova. He is a talented goalkeeper with high potential, but like Vicario, may find it difficult to adapt to the physicality and intensity of the Premier League.
That said, if Frank’s Spurs are indeed looking out for a new goalkeeper, it would be best to go for a proven talent in Burnley’s James Trafford.
