Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes during the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old has done quite well since moving to the Premier League, and he is reportedly valued at £50 million. Journalist Ben Jacobs has now revealed in a podcast with Last Word on Spurs that Tottenham are showing genuine interest in Gomes, and it remains to be seen whether they come forward with an offer to sign him.
Tottenham were keen on signing the player last year as well.
Jacobs said: “Tottenham have begun to show legitimate interest in Wolves defensive midfielder Joao Gomes, who has been loosely linked with a number of top Premier League clubs, including Tottenham’s summer transfer rivals and Europa League Final opponents, Manchester United. Wolves are eager to retain him and will only consider selling if their minimum asking price of £50 million is satisfied.”
They need to sign a defensive midfielder this summer, especially with Yves Bissouma set for an exit. Gomes could be the ideal acquisition for them in theory. He is capable of helping out defensively, and he will drive and control to the side as well. He has the attributes to develop into a complete midfielder.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are not the only Premier League club keen on him. They could face competition from Manchester United as well.
It will be interesting to see if Spurs can get the deal across the line. The player is entering his years, and this could be the right time for him to try out a new challenge. A move to Tottenham could be exciting for him. It would be a step up in his career, and he would get to compete in the UEFA Champions League.
Gomes could be attracted to the idea of joining a big club this summer. It remains to be seen how the situation develops.
