Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence has enjoyed a fine start to the 2025/26 season. The 25-year-old has been a mainstay at the back Thomas Frank’s side, deputising at left-back for the injured Destiny Udogie.
The Englishman helped Tottenham keep clean sheets in the opening two games against Burnley and Manchester City. While Spurs’ winning start to the season came to an end at the hands of Bournemouth last weekend, the full-back did not disappoint.
Honestly, Djed Spence’s career at Tottenham was going nowhere until last season. Having joined the club from Middlesbrough in July 2022, it took until December 2024 for the full-back to make his first start for the Lilywhites. His first league goal followed in February 2025 during a 4-1 triumph at Ipswich Town, earning him a nomination for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award. The former England youth international also played a part in Tottenham’s Europa League success under Ange Postecoglou in May.

Last month, Spurs rewarded Spence’s consistent performances and commitment with a new contract. The defender, who spent time on loan with Stade Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa, penned a new long-term deal at N17. And last week, he received a maiden senior call-up to the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
Now among several Tottenham players to have jetted off to represent their national teams this international break, Spence has now opened up on how he got to know about his England call-up. He explained that the news came via a text message, one that instructed him not to share the information with anyone before the official announcement happens.
“I received a text about the call-up. I got told, obviously, not to say anything. I just had a big smile on my face. I told my family to watch out for the announcement,” Spence revealed to the club’s official website.
“It was just a great moment for me. I had seen some of the boys I played with at Under-21 level get their call-up. It was motivation for me, and now I am finally here.”
It has been quite a turnaround in Spence’s Tottenham career. The tough experiences during his early days at Tottenham have truly enriched and shaped the 25-year-old as a player and person.
A right-back by trade, the London-born talent has nailed down his spot at left-back under Frank in Udogie’s absence. Having returned from injury last week, Udogie would find it difficult to dislodge Spence from the first XI. Spence’s hard work, resilience, persistence and commitment have paid off, earning him a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s squad at a crucial time with the World Cup taking place next summer.
Looking ahead, the flying full-back will be eager to maintain his form and focus, and achieve new milestones with Spurs.
