Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson did not hold back when asked about Lucas Bergvall. The Sweden manager called the 19-year-old “amazing” and pointed out how rare it is for someone that young to make this kind of impact at a top Premier League club. And he is not wrong. Bergvall has hit the ground running at Tottenham in a way few expected this early.
Here is what he had to say to Fotboll Skanalen via Sport Witness:
“He has been brilliant. He’s played really well,”
“He was not in the training camps in March and June because he had been sick and injured. I have to say that he has played very well now.”
“I didn’t watch the game yesterday, but I have seen the rest of his games. He has had an impact on the games; he is dynamic and plays with power. To do that at such a young age is amazing. He is doing a good job.”
Since the start of the season, Thomas Frank has trusted him with real minutes. He already has 10 appearances across all competitions, with one goal and three assists. Bergvall scored and set one up against West Ham, then picked up assists in the wins over Villarreal and Doncaster. He plays with confidence, drives into space, links play and does not look like a kid trying to fit in.
Tomasson made it clear he has been watching closely. He said Bergvall was not involved in previous Sweden camps because of timing and fitness issues, not because of quality. The national team boss described him as someone who plays with power and influence, and said that doing that in England at 19 is impressive.
Physically, he stands at 6’1 and uses his frame well even if aerial duels and strength are still areas he can grow in. What separates him is his football IQ and awareness on both sides of the ball. He plays mainly as a central or defensive midfielder, but his freedom to move between lines shows how trusted he already is. Creativity, dribbling, vision, defensive work rate and passing. You name the skill and he’ll show you why he’s better than other players hisage. He also has a bit of flair that makes him fun to watch without losing discipline.
Tottenham fought off Barcelona to sign him from Djurgarden in 2024, and that decision is already paying off. Across his Spurs career so far, he has 55 appearances with two goals and seven assists. Those are numbers you usually see from a player a few years older. The difference this season is consistency and presence. He looks like he belongs in games that matter, not just coming off the bench to fill space.
He already has four caps for Sweden, though he was left out of the last squad which raised questions back home. Tomasson responded by saying he is managing his development and not freezing him out. His tone made it clear he rates the midfielder highly and just wants to handle his progress the right way. The best part for Spurs is that this is not hype based only on potential. He is already producing. Fans wanted to see the kid everyone raved about when he arrived from Sweden. Now he is here, holding his own, and managers at both club and country level are openly impressed. If he keeps developing at this pace, Tottenham will not just have a promising youngster. They will have a midfielder other clubs start worrying about stopping.
