Kevin Danso was the first signing of Tottenham Hotspur’s summer transfer window. The defender had joined Spurs on loan from RC Lens during the second half of last season with a buy obligation clause. As soon as June started, his loan from RC Lens automatically got turned into a permanent deal.
The Austrian international performed well and helped the Lilywhites go all the way in the UEFA Europa League against all odds. However, Kevin Danso has not got many opportunities to showcase his talent under Thomas Frank. This is down to the fact that Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are Tottenham’s first-choice centre-back pairing and they have started the new season well.
As a result, Danso’s opportunities generally have come off the bench so far this season. He started Spurs’ 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup third round last month, and in midweek, the defender’s services were required.
Cristian Romero was ruled out for the Champions League fixture against Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday evening, with Thomas Frank saying the idea to leave his skipper out was “just precaution”. This opened the door for Danso to walk into the starting XI. He paired up with Van de Ven in central defence and completed 90 minutes, as Tottenham came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Bodo/Glimt in Norway.
When asked after the game how it feels to not be starting regularly and biding his time, the defender told Football London:
“Of course, when you don’t play as much it’s always a bit difficult, but I feel like I’ve got enough experience now, I know what it takes and I just know defensively I need to be stronger, a bit stronger than today.
“But I feel like with the experience, nine years professional now, it’s just part and parcel of football. You’ve got to be ready for the opportunity when it comes.”
It has been only a couple of months in the season and Spurs have shown signs of progress under Frank. The defensive organisation has improved, with Romero and Van de Ven back to their very best. As such, their constant involvement has led to Danso not getting regular minutes.
Not to forget, the north Londoners have plenty of games to cover this season, and with Frank determined to compete in all competitions, Danso should get plenty of opportunities to prove himself. The Austrian’s primary role is acting as Romero’s back-up, providing cover for the 2022 World Cup when required as he did in Bodo.
