Tottenham have made a significant U-turn and now want to sell Cristian Romero in the summer

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero recently returned to action after a long spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Following his comeback in the 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this month, the Argentina international aimed a subtle dig at Spurs’ medical staff. It adds to the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at the club, with La Liga side Atletico Madrid reportedly vying for the defender’s signature.

The Lilywhites want to secure the 26-year-old’s future by tying him down to a lucrative, long-term contract. However, Cristian Romero is understood to be unconvinced about extending his stay at White Hart Lane and is ready to do everything to engineer an exit at the end of the season. As a result, Spurs seem to have altered their plans when it comes to the centre-back.

According to an exclusive report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are tempted to sell the 2022 World Cup winner in a significant internal U-turn after Atletico Madrid have made their interest clear to the player’s representatives.

The La Liga side’s interest in the Lilywhites’ defensive colossus is being driven by head coach Diego Simeone. Los Rojiblancos have emerged as a realistic destination for the South American star, thanks to them already making contact with his camp to discuss a possible summer switch. With Romero on the course to enter the final two years of his current deal, the club chiefs internally acknowledge that the upcoming transfer window could be their final opportunity to secure a sizeable fee if they fail to extend his contract.

The aforementioned report adds that the North Londoners are now likely to listen to offers in the region of £45million for the Cordoba-born talent after lowering their demands. Spurs previously valued Romero at more than £60million, but they have now relaxed their stance in a bid to sell him. Atletico’s cross-town rivals, Real Madrid, also remain interested in signing Romero.

Romero, who has missed a lot of action this season due to a combination of hamstring and quadriceps injury, could force a move away from Tottenham this summer. If he doesn’t want to be a part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad and help the club challenge for trophies, now would be the time to cash in.

The ex-Atalanta man will have two years left on his contract at N17 this summer, and his value will only depreciate if the club don’t sell him. For now, Romero remains a high-profile asset, but if the club chiefs want to get as much money back as possible, it would be wise to offload hi,m with the player not lacking suitors.
