Tottenham vs Wolves: Three key battles

Tottenham Hotspur are set to get back to Premiership duties as they host a struggling Wolves at N17 tomorrow in a late kickoff. Thomas Frank’s side have been looking quite formidable in the early parts of the season, as they sit joint-second on the Premier League ladder, only behind Arsenal on goal difference.

The North Londoners will face a Wolves side that are chasing a record, a record to be only the fourth side to go without a win in the first six games of a new season. They did find some form in the midweek against Everton (FT: 2-0) in the Carabao Cup. And the visitors would be looking to use that as an inspiration coming to Tottenham.

There are a few key battles that can end up deciding who has an upper hand on most of the sequences. And we try to look at three of them…

Tottenham vs Wolves: Key Battles

Cristian Romero vs Tolu Arokodare

This could be the duel that sets the tone for Wolves’ hopes. While Arokodare is not a household name in the Premier League yet. He had that capacity to be a menace up front. He is someone who is quite physical, but he complements that with composure in front of goal. We saw both the traits on show against the Merseysiders in the midweek.

But then he is going to rub shoulders with Romero. Someone who relishes these kinds of battles.

He can use his trademark front foot defending and can dominate Arokodare quite early. And this is where he can ensure that he gets better of sequences before they get too dangerous. But as we have seen time and again, this one is a risky move, as one mistimed lunge and Arokodare will have space to spin in behind.

Lucas Bergvall vs Joao Gomes

Now this is setting up to be an exciting battle given how both the midfielders have this raw bite and energy playing in the second phase.

We have seen how Bergvall has been this box-to-box threat in the past months. But under Frank, the Swede has been carrying the ball with purpose. He has been making those deep runs (which have already led to goals against West Ham and Villarreal).

But on the other side of the fence is Joao Gomes. He is more of a midfield engine for the visitors. And he will be using his presses and snapping into challenges to try and disrupt the sequences that Tottenham are playing. If we are talking in terms of what directly relates to Bergvall, he will try to stop him from dictating the attacking tempo.

If the Swede maestro manages to get behind Gomes’ press and drive through midfield, then Tottenham can create overloads on Wolves’ back three.

Mohammed Kudus vs Toti Gomes

Coming to the right flank is one of Lilywhites’ marquee signings, Mohammed Kudus. He has been one of the most consistent attacking outlets for the North Londoners this season. The former Hammers star is a presence that thrives on combining flair with direct goal threat. And that is where his runs starting wide inside come into the picture. Then he has this ability to turn defenders with quick touches and feints, making it more difficult to keep track of him (for his marker). And he does all that dribbling capacity alongside it, which makes him a nightmare to defend.

And he will be against Toti Gomes. He is someone who would likely be trying to come into that half-space to contain Kudus. But it is a difficult task given how Kudus thrives in these 1v1s.
