Cristian Romero committing his future to the club was the best piece of summer business done by Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur made a series of exciting signings during the recently concluded summer transfer window.

Spurs ended up with seven summer signings, of which two players’ loans were turned into permanent deals in the first weeks of the transfer window. Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani were late additions to Thomas Frank’s squad as they aim to fight on all fronts this campaign.

Apart from bringing in fresh faces to N17, the Hotspur Way chiefs managed to keep hold of some coveted stars. One of them is Cristian Romero.

Securing future of Cristian Romero Tottenham’s best piece of summer business

Cristian Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta in August 2021, initially on loan before the move was made permanent the following summer. He has been a consistent performer for the north Londoners and captained the side in the Europa League final win over Manchester United, as the club ended their 17-year wait for a trophy.

The 2022 World Cup winner was heavily linked with a summer move to Atletico Madrid. Diego Simone reportedly held private talks with the 27-year-old to lure him to Atletico Madrid, but Tottenham remained firm on their stance to not sell him if their valuation was not met. Last month, Spurs ended speculation surrounding the defender’s future by tying him down to a new contract. The lucrative fresh deal ensures he will remain under contract at N17 until 2029.

Now, according to a report from The Athletic, Tottenham’s best piece of business during the summer transfer window was convincing Romero to stay at the club and sign a new long-term contract.

The Argentinean international’s new contract worth £195,000-per-week puts our club in a strong negotiating position if he is subject of offers when his previous suitor Atletico Madrid or any big European club get an opportunity to enter the transfer market when the window reopens next year. As it became very clear that Son Heung-min will end his decade-long chapter at White Hart Lane, Thomas Frank decided to name Romero his new captain.

The aforementioned report insist that Romero will spend the prime stages of his career with Tottenham after committing his long-term future in north London, and it was a better deal than raiding London rivals West Ham United Mohammed Kudus or luring one of Europe’s best talents in Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.

Keeping hold of Romero is a win-win situation for Frank & Tottenham

Indeed, persuading Romero to sign a fresh contract and stay at the club after a torrid 2024/25 Premier League campaign when he could have easily joined Atletico and fulfilled his dreams of playing in La Liga is a big achievement for Tottenham. Credit to the Cordoba-born star as well for taking up the challenge and being a part of the squad rebuild that has started under our new gaffer.

The 27-year-old has clearly indicated that he wants to win more titles at N17 while leading the club from the front. And the fans have already seen what a fully fit, focused and committed Romero is to the club. The tough-tackling and aggressive defender has started the 2025/26 campaign well, helping the team keep clean sheet in the opening two games.

Hopefully, Romero returns from international duty unscathed and continues his strong form for Frank’s side.
