The striker has been linked with a move away from Tottenham after failing to get regular minutes under Thomas Frank this season.

Back in May last season, Brennan Johnson etched his name into the Tottenham Hotspur history books by scoring the winner against Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao. The forward finished the campaign as the club’s top scorer with 18 goals in all competitions.

After playing a chief role in Spurs’ Europa League success, the Wales international was expected to kick on this season. Under new boss Thomas Frank, though, Brennan Johnson has struggled to secure a place in the first XI. The 24-year-old has started just six of Tottenham’s 17 Premier League matches, finding himself behind the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Wilson Odobert, Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel in the pecking order.

Unsurprisingly, the speedy attacker is frustrated by the lack of opportunities in Thomas Frank’s side, thereby leading to speculation surrounding his future.

Brentford and Ipswich Town express interest in signing Brennan Johnson

Recent reports have linked Johnson with a move to Crystal Palace. The Eagles are keen to bolster their wide department after losing Ismaila Sarr to the AFCON for potentially a month. Their boss, Oliver Glasner, has set his sights on signing the Tottenham man when the transfer window reopens on January 1.

However, Crystal Palace have now got competition for signing the Welshman. According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Brentford and Ipswich Town have entered the race for Johnson. They are interested in taking the Spurs winger on a loan deal. The Lilywhites are deciding whether to let Johnson leave in the upcoming winter window.

This comes after Thomas Frank recently addressed the speculation surrounding the player. The Dane said he is overall happy with Johnson and would like to keep him in the squad as Spurs are set to play a lot of games in the next couple of months. At the same time, he acknowledged that it is natural for the forward to not be satisfied with his game time and seek a move elsewhere, especially with the World Cup happening next summer.

Should Tottenham cash in on Johnson?

Johnson has every right to seek a fresh start in his career in the New Year. He is not really favoured by the gaffer, and at 24, the attacker cannot continue getting minutes off the bench if he is to fulfil his vast potential. With the World Cup happening in 2026, the time is perhaps right for the ex-Nottingham Forest star to leave Spurs, regain form and confidence at a new club.

As the winger has a contract running until 2028, the north Londoners are in a strong position to cash in on Johnson midway through the campaign and reinvest those funds in an adequate replacement for the second half of the season and beyond. And until and unless the Hotspur Way chiefs do not sort out his replacement, chances of the club greenlighting Johnson’s exit remain slim amid heavy interest from top-flight and Championship clubs.
