Sheffield United are accelerating their push to strengthen the back line after looking thin defensively across Ruben Selles’ first three games in charge.
According to Luca Bendoni , the Blades have agreed a deal with Atalanta for Ben Godfrey, who is expected to arrive in Manchester today to complete a season-long loan move. The 27-year-old, formerly of Everton, will undergo a medical before joining up with Selles’ squad, perhap s ready to face Millwall at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.
The former England international featured just three times in the Premier League during his loan spell at Ipswich Town last term. However, he does boast extensive top-flight experience having played 115 times in the Premier League altogether.
Godfrey’s arrival should give United some much-needed flexibility. He’s comfortable at centre-half but equally able to cover at right-back. Godfrey offers a blend of athleticism, power and recovery pace that Selles ’ high-line approach requires. His experience will also be a much-needed added attribute.
The Sky Sports journalist Luca Bendoni has also reported more news regarding Sheffield United’s hunt for defenders. The Blades are now turning their attention to Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga, with talks planned to progress soon. United are understood to be discussing a fee north of £5 million for the ex-Tottenham centre-back, although Millwall had initially set their valuation at around £7-8 million, per reports.
Tanganga would bring a strong presence in one-vs-one duels. Plus, he’s capable of operating in both a back four and back three, the 26-year-old fits the mould of a defender who can feature for a side that has aspirations of battling for promotion in the Championship.
As per West London Sport , Queens Park Rangers are pushing to sign Rhys Norrington-Davies, but the Blades will only sanction the deal once they have more bodies through the door.
The Welshman started for United during their 4-1 defeat against Bristol City on the opening day. The two second half goals came from his mistakes. As a result of his poor performance, he was sarcastically cheered and boo’d by the home fans at Bramall Lane when he eventually made way for Jack Robinson, who started on the bench that day following strong speculation over a move to Wrexham.
With Sheffield United now presumably having Nils Zatterstrom and Ben Godfrey in their defensive ranks, adding the experienced free agent Ben Mee as a backup would be wise. But, arguably the pick of the bunch would be signing Japhet Tanganga on a permanent deal from Millwall. This sort of depth would allow the likes of Jack Robinson and Norrington-Davies to depart the club.
If these reported transfers come true, it would go a long way towards easing the early-season jitters in South Yorkshire and would give Selles a defensive unit that’s capable of adapting to his relentless high pressing system.
