Thomas Frank wants his team to bounce back after exiting the Carabao Cup abruptly

Tottenham suffered a crushing defeat against Newcastle United, bringing their Carabao Cup run to an abrupt end. The Lilywhites looked second-best for most of the game, with the Magpies capitalising on the pragmatic approach adopted by Thomas Frank’s side. The loss at St. James’ Park also ended the North London club’s unbeaten away run in all competitions.

With fixtures coming thick and fast, Thomas Frank’s men have little time to dwell on the setback against Newcastle. Their attention now shifts to the Premier League, where they face fierce rivals Chelsea at home. The best way for Spurs to bounce back from their midweek disappointment would be by securing all three points against the Blues.

Enzo Maresca’s side currently sit three points behind Tottenham after nine league matches. Both teams have experienced mixed fortunes this season as they battle for European qualification. It goes without saying that the Lilywhites will need to be at their very best to overcome a Chelsea team that recently defeated reigning champions Liverpool earlier this month.

Tottenham need to carve out a positive result against Chelsea in the Premier League

Tottenham versus Chelsea is always a classic encounter. Both teams go at it from the first whistle, and the intensity of the rivalry never disappoints. There is no love lost between the two clubs, and the hostility from the stands often mirrors the tension on the pitch. This time, the first London derby of the season will take place at N17, as the Lilywhites aim to close the gap at the top and maintain their impressive start to the campaign.

When asked about experiencing his first London derby as Spurs manager in the pre-match presser, Thomas Frank said (via Tottenham Hotspur),

“Yeah, I think you put it quite right. A game against Chelsea, especially a home game against Chelsea, under the floodlights, is going to be unique and special. I can’t wait for it. The players are really looking forward to it. It’s a fantastic occasion.”

The Dane added,

“We need the fans behind us. We need to perform. We need to create energy. Can we get energy off the fans? Then it’s like some positive reinforcement and that’s what we need to create tomorrow. We’re really looking forward to it.”

As Frank rightly said, the clash against Chelsea will indeed be “unique and special.” Both teams will give everything to secure all three points and continue their strong starts to the Premier League campaign. For Spurs, the opportunity to respond to their Carabao Cup exit with a win over their biggest rivals would be the perfect statement. The Danish tactician has also called on the supporters to create energy and get behind the players as they look to turn their fortunes around at home.

Predicting which way this game will go is no easy task. Chelsea have come out on top in their last four Premier League meetings with Spurs. However, if the Lilywhites can replicate their performances from earlier this season, they have every chance of turning the tide and putting the Blues under real pressure.
